The term resume format can have different meanings. It sometimes refers to structure, style or type of electronic file. There is no right or wrong resume format. There are a few different types of resume format you can use.
The functional resume format is one that gives emphasis to specific professional capabilities and uses your work experience as its main means of communicating professional competency. On the other hand, the chronological resume format will highlight these competencies before presenting an example of their career experiences.
A resume format is the correct structure of the resume. A resume format includes the order of subcategories, content of subcategories and commons styles used for each. For example, we will define the two most common ways of a resume format.
Reverse Chronological Resume Format and Functional Resume Format. Often times people refer to “resume format” as style or type of electronic file, such as referring to the word processing file.
The chronological resume format is the most common resume layout in use. In using this resume format, the main body of the document becomes the Professional Experience section, starting from the most recent experience going chronologically. This resume format works to construct reliability through your work experience while showing career growth over time. Remember, your resume needs to impress the hiring manager enough so you get the interview. That means it needs to be perfect.
How to choose a resume format?
Look at the resume format samples and the features of each resume format. Choose the mixture of features that matches your skills. Do not choose a resume format merely because the fictional jobseeker in a sample resume format has your qualities. Jobseekers a variety of industry can use any resume format. You may choose any style regardless of the type of employment you are seeking. Choose a resume format which best shows how your individual abilities support your objective. If you are unsure, start with try the traditional chronological resume format. Always have your resume critiqued, and revise your resume as needed. Don’t just copy a resume format example that you like. Instead, choose your resume format very carefully. Review resume format examples, choose a resume format that highlights your strengths and achievements, and review a typical resume format.
Because the purely functional resume format has become the subject of employer backlash in recent years, some job-seekers have learned to structure their resumes in a mostly functional resume format but to also include work history in reverse order, creating what is known as a chrono-functional, hybrid, or combination resume format.
The chrono-functional/hybrid/combination resume format highlights outstanding skills and achievements that might otherwise be buried within the job-history section. The focus is on clusters of transferable skills and the experiences that are most relevant to the position for which you are applying.
Bottom line is you need to spend some time in choosing your resume format. As mentioned above, there is no set resume format or acceptable standard resume format. It is up to you to convey to your reader clearly, why you deserve the job by simply choosing a good resume format.
