ExtraMile becomes the first franchisee of ExerTech, which announced plans to franchise its business in March.

Gabe Forest, president and CEO of Extra Mile and a Wilmington resident, acquired ExerTech franchise rights to Newark, Del., Camden and Gloucester Counties in New Jersey, and Bucks County in Pennsylvania.

Forest has already hired and trained at least one local technician in each county who will be solely responsible for servicing customers in that territory.

It will be important to have local technicians who live in and know their communities, Forest added. Not only will this reduce repair turn-around time, but the customers will get to know the technician on a personal level.

Twelve MidKent College Joinery students have visited a barn in Weald of Kent village Chart Sutton to view the design and construction of a unique roof. Cranbrook-based construction company Tenterden Building & Restoration (TB&R) is crafting the roof to go onto a contemporary swimming pool building designed for a private client by Sevenoaks and Benenden architectural firm, jhd Architects.

TB&R have the specialist carpentry skills needed to create this architecturally bold and technically challenging structure, says jhd Architects principal Tim Ball.

The visit was organised by TB&R Managing Director and former MidKent student Martin Pearson together with Phillip Patton, Programme Area Leader for Carpentry and Joinery courses at the College.

We are always happy to share our expertise with young people preparing for a career in architecture and related trades says Kent Architect Tim Ball of jhd Architects.

This one-off, exciting structure requires complicated carpentry skills which we were keen to share with young people preparing for a career working with timber. Its also great to give something back to the College which taught me so much said Mr Pearson.

Phillip Patton said: This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to view the design and construction of something unique, and to learn from an expert in his field. Having progressed from MidKent College student to managing director of his own company, Martin is a source of inspiration for our young people who were extremely grateful for his help and advice.

Maidstone, Kent firm Allan Baxter Partnership undertook the detailed design of the roof.
