Resume Tips: Improving Your Resume

]]>

Your resume is going to be the single most effective tool that you have at your disposal when you set out to get a new job. The resume that you submit is going to be the very first impression that potential employers will have of you and for this reason, you will want to do everything in your power to make your resume as strong as possible. A weak resume will more likely than not be ignored and in a corporate climate where the best professional presentation is usually the one recognized, you need to make sure that your own resume can live up to these standards.

Watch Your Choice Of Words

The way that you describe yourself within your resume will be one of the most important factors on whether you will appear interesting enough to call back for a job. Employers want to hire people who have the skills and qualities necessary to become a valuable member of the team and who can fulfill all of the duties that the job dictates. The words that you choose to do this in your resume are going to be very important.

In your prior work experience, you will want to take care to describe the jobs which gave you the greatest relevance to the position that you are applying for. Describe your personal accomplishments within that job. When you are detailing your personal skills and attributes that make you a suitable candidate for the current position, make sure that you consider how they will fit into the overall picture of the company’s success. Using eye-grabbing keywords around these accomplishments and skills can help make you even more attractive to the hiring employer, as they can indicate that you know how to command their attention and use it to your benefit.

Be Aware Of How The Resume Looks As Well

The actual appearance of your resume is going to be another important quality for your success. Make sure to carefully proofread your resume, looking for spelling and grammar errors. Take the time to also carefully check all of the facts that you have listed, as you will want to be fully accurate with everything you are describing. This indicates a strong work ethic and shows that you are professional and that you do pay very close attention to all of the details.

You can also make a great impression with the professionalism of your resume itself. Make sure that it is printed on clean white paper of a good stock. Cheap paper will result in a cheap printing quality which can make your resume smudge or appear weak. The font selection will be important as well. You want to show personality in your resume while still being professional. Choose a classy font which is clear to read but can still give an indication of who you are as a worker. Do all of your printing in black ink. This can help you put together a resume, which looks great and has a better chance of being noticed.

Resume Writing Service – The Most Important 5 Tips You Must Remember in Crafting Your New Resume

Are you stuck staring at the screen at a blank piece of paper, unsure what to do next? You are not alone, millions of people right now are doing the same exact thing as you. They are staring at a blank screen and thinking to themselves, “How am I going to get all of my profile, core competencies, experience, awards, and achievements on one page?” Here’s the good news, you don’t have to. Here is the bad news, it’s harder than you think.

A resume is not your life story – it is NOT a BIO and it is NOT a HISTORY REPORT. It is a 1-2 page streamlined, focused document which will convince your potential next employer to call you in for an interview and take the time out of his or her day to interview you, and possibly hire you. In order to assist you in creating this document, I have come up with 5 important pointers that apply, no matter what your field, experience level, or skills sets are:

1. BRAINSTORM : I cannot stress this enough. Let’s take for example a 30 year old HR Manager with 6 years of experience at one position. That 6 years of experience equates to nearly 1000+ days spent at the office. Let’s also say you spend 9 hours per day working. Overall, that would come to more than 9000 hours of work you have performed for this one employer. Considering you have to execute a 1 page document (No matter what anyone tells you, anyone with less than 10-years’ experience should have a 1 page resumes) that will highlight this 9000 hours of work, do yourself a favor and take a good hour to first jot down your experiences at this position before starting to draft the resume.

2. OUTLINE: Let’s assume you have 5 pages of information. Now, the next step is to reduce this 5 pages to 2 pages. For most people. This is nearly impossible – which is understandable because many of these experiences are important. BUT remember, that is not the threshold, the threshold is “IF YOU HAVE ONLY 10 SECONDS TO GRAB A POTENTIAL EMPLOYER’S ATTENTION – WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM.”

3.WRITE AND THEN REWRITE: As the saying goes, all first drafts are (expletive). If you have not written, revised, and revised the resume at LEAST 5 times, then the resume is not strong enough, not streamlined enough, and simply not good enough.

4. SHOW IT TO SOMEONE YOU TRUST: Our eyes and our brains are not perfect. If you read the same document over and over again, you will lose perspective, become myopic about the information within the resume, and probably miss what could be crucial errors in the resume.

5.CONSIDER HIRING A PROFESSIONAL: A (CPRW) – Certified Professional Resume Writer, specifically one with at LEAST 5 years of experience. Writing a solid, effective resume is an art form. It take a resume writer with thousands of resume under his or her belt to be able to effectively spot the defects in your resume, and have the tools to develop and execute a strategy to draft a wonderful new document for you.

Good Luck!

Best Administrative Assistant Resume Tips

]]>

Much has been written and discussed on how to write a resume title or administrative assistant resume for that matter but still a final draft that could be relied upon has not emerged yet.

The pivotal reason for the same has been the change in the requirement of the potential recruiters and also the job profile. Basically, resume writing is an art and only a few of the applicants are able to pull it off. Thus, writing a resume according to the current demand of the employers becomes a necessity.

In the same context, let’s see some of the important administrative assistant resume writing tips.

Know the purpose of the resume- Don’t draft your administrative assistant resume like a job seeker who is desperately looking for a job. Always remember that the foremost aim of the resume shall be to grab an interview call. Also you need to shift the theme of the resume to the job title you are applying. For example- If you are an applicant for a web designer position, make sure the resume is not positioned for administrative assistant post. Thus, knowing the whole idea behind a resume is crucial

Objective Statement- Once you have written your full name on the top left side of the resume, writing an objective statement must loom large next. An objective statement is nothing but a goal to be achieved professionally in a given duration of time period. Writing the same gives a good impression to the employers that you are serious enough about your future and could be considered for the applied position

Enlist your professional experience- This is the column you must be waiting to be listed. Start with the most recent work experience and follow the next ones in a chorological order. Also mention the position held, teams handled, any award or reward for the work, etc. If you are a fresher you can also mention any internships and training done.

Educational credentials are a must- Next to follow in the administrative assistant resume is to mention the candidate’s educational qualifications. You should start with the most recent degree and it can be followed by the less important degrees

Avoid mentioning about hobbies- No need to increase the length of the resume by mentioning your hobbies, it’s not a good thing to add as recruiters dislike the same

Use correct keywords- You must know that various employers are searching for the right candidates online. Thus your resume must contain the keywords searched by them to be in the fray for the position. Correct keywords mean using power words that may be on the mind of the employers. Example- If an employer is offering an administrative assistant job, your resume must contain the same word so that the search engine is able to take out your resume

Resume is a French word that means “summary”. A resume gives a brief account of one’s education, employment & other skills, used in applying for a job position. If you are a fresher looking for a job, it is important for you to look good on paper.

Here are a few tips that can help you make a good resume:

The Format:

There is no one correct resume format for making a resume. A resume is a way to showcase your profile in your unique style. Just highlight what you think makes an impressive statement.

Write The Basics:

Objective – To attract the employer, in about 2-3 lines to highlight your focus in life, amalgamated with your skills and job requirement.

Contact Info – Make sure that you put relevant, current and correct contact information. It will come handy for the employer.

Education – Mention your degrees and the credentials, in a complete fashion. Also, don’t forget, to specify any certifications undertaken for that extra edge.

Experience – If you have any internship or any other kind of employment experience, include it in your resume.

Skill-Set – List all the buzz words that describe your potential best.

Attract with Specifics:

If you are a multi-talented person and if you are seeking vacancies”>vacancies in different sectors, you must amend your resume suiting the needs of that particular job.

Stress on the areas of your expertise and strength in that field to appear the most deserving of that spot.

Mention Important Pointers:

One very interesting thing to mention in your resume is the Volunteer Professional activities. These pointers not only showcase your leadership, commitment and abilities but, also diversify your interest and skill set.

Advertise yourself in your resume:

Don’t sell yourself but advertise yourself. You must have read it millions of time. But, it truly leaves an impact on the employer. Mention all your valuable assets, even if they don’t seem to fit for a particular job.

Reverse writing:

Always list your qualifications and experiences or anything that has a chronology, in a reverse order. In other words, place everything in order of relevance, from most to least and current to previous.

Formatting Matters:

Use of suitable fonts (Times New Roman, Arial etc.), margins (1.5 inches preferably) and indentation is a key to a good resume. Avoid making a fancy sheet overloaded with creativity.

Other than that, always make your resume in a .doc (Word Document) with a size within 100Kb or maximum 2 pages with a decent file name.

Proof read it afterwards:

Apart from essential spell-check, grammatical anomalies and punctuations, make sure that you get your resume proofread by people attentive to details. Do consider their valuable critiques.

View ability:

While making a resume, keep this thing in mind that you have to target the recruiters. Also, to market your resume effectively and make it viewable, use right sources and right networking.

Apart from these aforementioned rules, you can always seek resume writing services help from some good company. You can also refer to some pre-designed resumes for help. But, always try to make your original resume.

Once you have decided to resign from your job, you need to devise a way of doing it. Keep the decision to yourself and make sure people are not talking about it in the office before you have informed your boss. Resign in person and not over an SMS or phone or even e-mail. While discussing your resignation, don’t reveal too much about your new employer. Be firm but tactful. If salary is the main reason, say that you are getting a better offer monetarily and in terms of career growth.

Your CV is the first document that you’ll use to reach your prospected employer. It is your CV that will secure important interviews and will be the gateway to your new job.

Remember – your CV will speak for and about you, so you will need to ensure that it covers the following topics:

Personal Information

Both personal characteristics and background alike are important to any potential employer, no matter what kind of market you want to enter. Your name should head the document and immediately following that your exact date of birth should be given.

Affix a passport-sized photograph of yourself on the top right corner. If you are seeking opportunities within the Asian market, list your educational accomplishments beginning with the lowest; from elementary to collegiate. Also, mention any foreign languages you are fluent in, relevant classes you are attending, and your travel experiences.

Allow them to stand out in detail in your CV under a separate heading, showing that you are culturally-oriented and part of a global community.

Job History

Some organizations require only job-history specifics. They may want work record certificates and recommendations to be attached directly to the CV. This requirement will differ from country to country.

It is a good idea to inquire exactly what the organization would prefer for you to include in your CV before sending it to them.

Professional History

In most countries outside the United States, you will be required to list in chronological order the professional experience you have obtained or gathered over the year. That means that you begin with the first job you ever had, then the next, and so on and so forth. Your professional experience should be listed in order from the most recent to last in reverse chronological order.

In Britain, for example, employers wish to see your professional experience in reverse order. That means you start with the latest job and work backwards to your first job.

This is similar to the American resume, which is prepared in much the same fashion. It would perhaps be a good idea to find out the preferred chronological order prior to sending it out.

Language Style

Take care not to present your efforts and achievements as individual or singular achievements, but as team efforts. Your accomplishments will have more impact if they were achieved as being part of a team.

This will hold true no matter what the level of your contribution. You can also mention the achievements in phrase form excluding pronouns and verbs, for example: ‘maintained supplies’ should be used instead of saying ‘maintenance of supplies’.

Simple Presentation

Fancy fonts should be avoided altogether. Section titles should be placed in bold fonts. Language and style should be simple and short. Make your CV relevant in style to your level of experience and the job applied for.

Bartender Resume Tips – Basic Guidelines For Bartender Applicants

When applying for a job as a bartender, your resume will be a powerful tool that can either help you or hurt you. Bartending jobs can provide you with an income which is considerable to pay off the bills and have an extra money for your recreations and other expenses. Plus, there is nothing more exciting than getting paid to pour those drinks and be the life of the party!

When you are applying for a job as a bartender, you should consider some guidelines to help you stand out from the competition:

Look Professional! Dress up!
When going for an interview or applying for a job, your dress really does matter. Make sure you are wearing nice clothes. For men, the long-sleeved collared shirt and some slacks is great. Just make sure that you have ironed your attire so there are no wrinkles. Also, there is such thing as over dressing, so be wary of that. You also have to wipe out all the jewelry, bracelets, necklaces, etc-they don’t need it. Most employers will look what you can do just by judging how you dressed. (1st impressions!!) Present yourself in a organized, neat and professional manner, and you’ve got a leg up on the competition.

Punctual
To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is unacceptable. Make this your motto and arrive early for your interview. It will affect how your bar manager evaluates you.

Courteous
With that 1st impression, be courteous! Always give a warmp introduction(greeting) to the employer with a firm handshake and a big smile.

Answer Straight
When in an interview, no matter what questions you may get, be attentive and try to answer straightforward. Never use faulty words like saying “hhmmm..”. If you don’t know or understand the question, just let them know.

Always follow the Rules
Don’t ignore any rules that are posted on the job hiring announcement. When they give rules about the format or style of your resume, the basic materials to bring, what to wear, etc.,don’t reinvent and make your own.

Be an Empty Cup
Most bartenders with great talentsfrom their previous jobs are hard to train in their new job because they think they know a lot. This just makes the bar manager’s job harder. Whatever you knew or have, always be an empty cup to learn more. Tell employers that you are willing to be trained and learn.

Don’t afraid to ask
You can ask them what you don’t understand. They will more appreciate you do it, it means you are willing to learn. You can also ask them a about the salary, the time schedule and etc.

Be Prepared
Prepare yourself for a test where your abilities and knowledge about bartending maybe tested. Hint:Some employers will ask you the basic equipments that a bartender should have.

Those are just a few things that a bar or restaurant manager will be looking for when hiring you.

Resume Tips: How to Quickly and Easily Create Jaw-Dropping Career Accomplishments

When I ask my clients to give me success stories of their various career achievements I often hear the following comments:

I can’t really quantify my successes

It’s just my job

I don’t think of myself in that way

I can’t recall accomplishments “like that”

It’s really hard for me to give you that information

Can you relate? Its okay first of all – you see, you are not alone!

But I will let you in on a secret: there is a simple trick to recalling and creating your accomplishments and once you master this little technique you too can create “jaw-dropping” accomplishments that will have potential employers really excited to talk with you!

So here are several tips to get you started:

Tip #1: Key Word Your Strengths

Start with a blank sheet of paper. Now begin to brainstorm on all the things you love to do the best. Just have fun with it.

If you are feeling stuck take a break for a day (which gives your subconscious mind a chance to bring these thoughts to the surface). These are the things you love to do and they are usually connected to those skills and functions you are doing when you are really doing your best work.

Tip #2 How to Turn Your Strengths into Stories

Now look at your list and for each keyword ask yourself “why do I feel this way?” For example maybe you wrote “Motivating” as one of your strengths.

Asking yourself “why do I feel I am motivating?” will trigger your memory of an event you are connecting that determined strength to.

Maybe it was the time you motivated your boss to let you take on a project that generated a certain amount of revenue for your company or perhaps you motivated a national sales team with incentives that increased the companies client base.

Tip #3: Write a Simple Template for Each Story

Your template is really easy and it goes like this:

Problem:

What I Did:

The Result:

A key here is not to make this complicated at all! Keep your answers short (think of how products are marketed…less definitely increases your impact!)

Bonus Tip:

Don’t be tempted to fall into the trap of thinking your successes aren’t important enough to write down or share! This is a common trap you definitely want to avoid. If it shows off your strengths is generally worthy of sharing.

It’s hard to be objective about our successes because of our internal rationale that “oh, that’s just what I do” or “anybody could do it really.”

If you catch yourself thinking this way then know you are devaluing the unique and honorable skills and strengths you bring to the table.

Give your aptitudes their due and you will find as you grow confident in communicating them – it can and will result in more interest and bigger offers from potential employers!

The Best Resume Tip for Medical Sales Jobs

What’s the best way to show recruiters and hiring managers why they should consider you for a position? It has nothing to do with the interview…go back a step. It’s your resume. But many sales reps fail to understand exactly what recruiters and hiring managers are looking for when they scan resumes.

As a medical sales recruiter, I frequently see resumes cross my desk from candidates who’ve had experience in selling roles, but fail to include numbers, dollars, or percentages on their resumes. It’s a common mistake that can really hurt you in the job search.

What do I mean by numbers, dollars, or percentages? Here are some examples: revenue in the territory, percent-to-budget, average selling price, largest account, largest sale, rank among sales reps, how many sales reps in their company, etc. There are many factors they could use to show their productivity.

Why? If you don’t include these statistics on your resume, it sends the message that you aren’t clear on what your role as a sales rep is supposed to be.

If you do understand your role as a sales rep, you understand that your job is to drive revenue. You must include evidence that supports your success in that role on your resume – in the form of dollars, numbers and percentages. That’s what will attract the attention of recruiters and sales managers.

Remember, your resume is your marketing brochure. Use it to show potential employers that they need you because you know how to drive revenue for their company—and you’ve done it before for others.

RESUME TIPS: Top 5 Skills / Qualities Employers Want

Whether you’re looking to find a new position all together or “upgrade” to a different position with your current employer, the results of the National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2010 survey may surprise you… and your resume.

The Job Outlook 2010 survey of employer organizations holding NACE memberships was conducted from mid-August through October 2009.

Test Your Resume Against the Top 5

The Job Outlook 2010 study’s Top 5 Candidate Skills/Qualities summarize the skills employers report as essential for candidates to possess. Does your resume demonstrate these characteristics that employers report are essential to on-the-job-success?

First, review your resume. Think it sells all you offer? Presents a compelling “hire me” story?

Now run your resume through the Top 5 list below as a filter. Is your resume too focused on technical skills and industry-specific knowledge without spending enough time on these skills employers are looking for? Have you linked these Top 5 skills to tangible results that demonstrate the value you bring to an organization?

To say that you possess “excellent [fill in the blank] skills” is not enough. To set yourself apart from the hundreds of other candidates applying for the same position, you must demonstrate your unique strengths in these Top 5 areas through real examples with successful, measurable outcomes.

When your resume answers “what’s in it for me if I hire you?” in these five areas, your resume is more likely to land at the top of the pile of candidates to call for in-person interviews.

Top 5 Candidate Skills/Qualities

The Top 5 along with a few action phrase starters as examples of how to prove your skills in these essential areas:

1. Communication Skills
Facilitated group discussions…
Detailed accurate information…
Delivered engaging presentations…
Summarized plans concisely…
2. Analytical Skills
Strategically considered options…
Interpreted data to back up…
Surveyed target audiences…
Validated through trend research plans to…
3. Teamwork Skills
Collaborated with colleagues to…
Fostered a culture of… in the team by…
Participated as member of…
Built trust within team to accomplish…
4. Technical Skills
Engineered new unit…
Installed hardware…
Programmed customized IT solution…
Integrated systems…
5. Strong Work Ethic
Businesslike
Dependable
Flexible/adaptable
Productive

Match Them to Your Strengths

Yes, ideally you will prove your worth to a new employer by including these Top 5 throughout your resume with strong examples of measurable results.

CAUTION: Be aware that you are always selling YOUR strengths, talents and abilities vs. simply saying what you think they want to hear. If you’re an introvert with excellent written communication skills tout that not your “powerful public speaking presence.” That’s not you. If using your analytical skills means you gather information by interview and talking with members of the right audience, don’t spend time talking about your preference to be closed away for hours at a time hunkered over spreadsheets.

Well, you could do the opposite (any Seinfeld fans out there?) of what is true to you, and yes you may even get that job. But I guarantee misery will set in right about that 90-day “probationary period” deadline.

Bottom line: Include these Top 5 while making sure how they are presented are authentic to your personal brand.

10 Commandments of Personal Branding

As with company, product and service brands, your personal brand is best built on your UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION (UVP). That is, the unique value only you bring to any situation — on the job, in volunteer capacities, at home — that no one else can offer. What place do you own in the minds of your key “stakeholders?” What do you want to be known for? What promise do you make to your “consumers?”
