Find A New Job – Taking The First Step

Are you unhappy with your current employment or are you currently unemployed? If so, you’ll want to begin your job search with some simple steps to determine what it is that you want first. If you don’t you may end up in another unhappy situation. Taking the time to determine what it is you want is critical to finding the right employment for you.

Your first step in determining your wants in your next job is to list all of the aspects of your current or previous jobs that you both liked and disliked. List everything that comes to mind including the type of boss you would like to work for, the commuting time, vacation time, opportunities for advancement, co-workers, industry, salary and benefits and whatever else you feel inspired to put down.

Once you’ve got your list, you then should determine which of those “things” you must have in your next job. Don’t be too picky otherwise you may not find any suitable opportunities at all. For any item on your list that was something you didn’t like about a previous job, write down the opposite of that. For example, if you didn’t like your co-workers because they were unfriendly or unsupportive, write down that you would like to work with people you can happily eat lunch with every day.

Your next step is to list anything else that you would like in a new job opportunity even if it’s never been a part of any job you’ve ever held before. For instance, suppose that you’ve always worked in the manufacturing industry but you’re really fascinated by the medical industry and would love a job in that field. List the medical industry as one of your “wants” regardless of whether or not you’ve ever worked for a company in that business. You most likely have skills that are transferable to another industry so don’t let the lack of experience hold you back.

My point is that you need to design a plan before you begin your job search so that you have focus. Otherwise, you may find yourself applying for every job in sight and not really making any progress or worse, landing in a job that you’re really unhappy with. The above steps are a good place to start in developing a strategy for your job search. I’ve been a professional resume writer for several years and I’ve discovered that the biggest challenge that people have with landing employment is that they don’t have a focused plan. Once you have a focus, you can then develop a targeted resume that will help you to land your dream job.

If you need to find a job, or get a better job then there are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of landing that job!

Apply: Be sure to apply for a bunch of jobs, not just one or two…the more the merrier! The law of averages will be more in your favor if you apply at several places of employment!

Interview: Make the interview a huge success by being prepared, being there earlier, and be alert and awake and organized! The interview is a large part of “getting a new job!”

Best Appearance: Be sure that you are bathed and well groomed, and wearing nice clothes. Do not show up dressed as though you’re going to the beach. Men should shave and women should not wear too much make-up or jewelry.

My name is Father Time, of www.FatherTimePublishing.com and I am a self-help writer and speaker…I want to help YOU find the job that you seek! Keep thinking positive and stay optimistic and you will find the job that you need!

Great References: Be sure to obtain permission from some people you know to use them as a reference and give the best references that you can. Many employers do not check, but some do, and if they do, you want to make sure they will be talking to someone who will rave about you!

First Impression: They say that you never have a second chance to make a first impression, so when you go to the interview, be prepared to be “on stage” and give an award winning performance!

My Daily Motivational e-mail Message just might help you, not just with the job search, but with many things, and YOU can have a FREE subscription, so go sign-up right now!

Great Resume: Be sure to update your resume and make sure that it does a good job of “selling” YOU!

Good Luck Amulet: There are many people who are superstitious and use good luck charms or amulets to attract money, love, and success into their lives. If you are job searching, why not try using a powerful and effective good luck charm, just in case it might help? It cannot hurt to have a little extra help!

Spread The Word: Tell others who know you that you are looking for a job, and maybe some of them will keep their eyes and ears open for you!

Good Luck & Many Blessings!

How To Find The Work You Love, Not Just A New Job

Edit Article |

Several of my clients are not happy at their jobs. They don’t feel appreciated. They don’t feel challenged. They don’t love the work. They wish they were doing something more fulfilling, more exciting, more passionate.

And their first questions to me are, “Can you help me write my objective on my resume. Can you help me find a new job.”

And I ask them, are you looking for the same situation?

Because, unless we change the HOW and the WHY of what we are looking for, the WHAT will remain the same.

It’s so easy to just want a new job. To get out of here, to find a new, better there. But, unless you take the time to figure out what you’d really love to be doing, you’re going to end up in the same unsatisfying situation.

If you want a different outcome, you have to take a different approach.

I am not a career counselor. My job is not to help you find a job. My job is to help you get back in touch with your heart, your passion, to discover the work you are truly meant to do.

And it’s a process.

And it takes time.

One of the assignments I give my clients is to write a list of all the things they don’t like about their job. Then, on another piece of paper, they write everything they DO like about it.

It could be the actual work, the location, the hours, the people, what they wear, even the job title.

And then, on a third page, they begin to imagine their ideal work situation, incorporating what they don’t want, what they do want and what else they’ve secretly wished for.

By dissecting the “problem” they are able to see that there are aspects of the job that ARE working. This way, they have something positive to focus on as they begin the deeper work. It gives them small reasons to stay at this job that they hate while they are exploring what else might be possible.

And then the real work can begin.

So where in your own life are you unhappy, dissatisfied, wishing for something more heart-centered? Are you so focused on these negative aspects that you aren’t able to see any good in the current situation?

I invite you to take out your own piece of paper and list everything about this situation that isn’t working for you. Then, on another paper, write everything that does bring you some sense of pleasure, satisfaction, pride.

And then, on a third page, give yourself permission to imagine your dream situation, where you feel fulfilled, appreciated, excited, thrilled to show up every day.

THIS is where you can begin to focus your attention.

THIS is how you begin to discover the work you are truly meant to be doing.

After 16 years of banking, running three companies, caring for two children and six horses, my husband and I decided the life we had created was not for us. Despite spending 17 years together and loving every minute of each other’s company, Marcus and I, like many others, felt like prisoners of stress. We would spend our free time studying various holistic modalities, yearning to find a way to cope with our continual stresses without having to give up our careers and lifestyles.

Purify With Practice

“It is very important to consider what evolution and development at the level of the soul really means. It’s not something we’re accustomed to thinking about very deeply… There’s a tremendous amount of resistance within us to the very thing that we think we want. So it’s essential to knoyv this from the very beginning, because then we can be prepared to do battle with it.”

Confessions of Every Man’s “Dream Woman

According to Michael P. Johnson, professor of sociology at Penn State, there are three things that keep a person in a marriage: people want to stay, they feel they ought to stay, and/or they have to stay. This combination of personal, moral, and structural commitment serves to keep people in marriages.
Notice that commitment keeps people in marriage–not happines.

Having the ability and opportunity to “become the best within us” is our charge to be selfish. This is Ayn Rand’s basic philosophy of Objectivism. Workers are always deciding whether they are really happy with there job or should they try to find a better one. Usually after the first of the year people will look at there situation and decide if they should be on the hunt for something new. It is possible that you are bored with your current job and are in need of a change. There are a lot of reasons that who may be looking for a new job but there are certain reasons that you may not want to tell at your new job interview.

Learn How To: Get the Perfect Job

When talking about yourself you do not want to be negative about your last or current job, it is always best to be positive and truthful. You may want to mention that you are underemployed and you are looking for something that better matches your skills. You may want to let the new employer know that you are looking for a better opportunity with a job that gives you room for advancement.

Learn About: Positive Work Habits

Always remember to talk about the positive because they will see you as a good person to hire. If you are bashing your current employer and tell the interviewer that you fight with everyone there and you have to get a new job because you hate all the employees then they are going to think how long before this person feels this way about us.

Remember when your are looking for a new job it is important what you say during the interview and make sure you shine a positive light on your current situation or else you may not even have a chance at the new opportunity.

The Soft-Spoken Voice: Is It a Strength or a Weakness?

Many years ago when I first started my business, I had a most eye-opening experience that I will never forget. It happened on a consecutive Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, I had been working with a group from Nortel in voice and presentation skills. One of the men from the group told me that, in the previous week, he had found others listening to him. That had never happened before. Apparently for Jim, whenever he was in conference, everyone talked over him.

Ladies, If Image Matters, Do Not Ignore Your Voice

I have spent the last few months questioning why my customers, as well as the subscribers to my newsletters, consist of 75% men and only 25% women. If you look at the picture objectively, we women often sound like ill-tuned violins. (And, it is certainly possible that this is one of the reasons men don’t always listen to us!)

Interior Design Sales – The Love and Hate of It

Whether you want to admit it or not, sales is a critical part of being a successful designer or decorator. You can be the most innovative and creative person around, but you’ll need to sell yourself to win the client, you have to sell your ideas and philosophies to get a retainer, you must sell your design concept to get the project, and you have to sell your presentation to get paid. Most important of all, if you don’t accomplish all of these steps, you’ll your beautiful designs come to life.

Settling In At A New Job

Getting a new job can be extremely difficult. With the economy not being as strong as it once was, you may find yourself competing against hundreds of other possible applicants for the same position. You may feel like getting the job is the hardest part, but many people underestimate a different aspect of getting a new job: settling in amongst new coworkers and procedures. In this article, we’ll offer some tips on how to make the transition as easy as possible while being the best employee that you can.

- Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re starting your job! If you’re new, clearly, you’re not going to instantly understand all the processes that everyone goes through and how exactly the workplace functions. If you’re ever unsure on the details of something, be sure to ask – it’s better to do things right the first time then having to repeat a process to fix your mistakes.

- Do your best to mesh with your co-workers. Odds are, there’s something you have in common with every individual person that you work with. Be sure to keep smiling and be as nice as possible; new people are often subject to the third degree when they are less than enthusiastic, and it can really dampen your experience in the workplace.

- Another important thing to figure out in the first few days is the chain of command. Realize exactly who is allowed to tell you to do something, to ensure that you aren’t performing another coworker’s duties for them.

- Be sure to be early for work every day, leaving a good impression on your new boss. Also, do your best not to rush away from work when quitting time comes – you should show a strong work ethic and a commitment to your job.

These are just some simple tips that can make life around the workplace easier. Making a good first impression is one of the most important things you can do at a job, and it can truly pay off over time. A new job can end up positive or negative based off of the first few weeks. First impressions are tough to break, so be sure to put your best face on at your new job!

My New Job: Writing Dangerously

Edit Article |

When I first started my new job, I made a commitment to myself to give myself a creative outlet even though I had to go back to a box job. The new job put me in a cube, which was a rough setback from the kick-ass office I used to have overlooking 42nd Street, a block from a beautiful park overlooking the United Nations Building.

Each day I bring my camera with me and take a walk to capture images of life. I take notes on the subway so I feel like I’m getting some writing done. Somehow writing direct marketing messages isn’t satisfying the writing thirst. Each day I’d hope to produce something for me of which I can be proud.

Lately I’ve let myself down because once again, in a familiar pattern, I let work trump my life. At times like this, my insides are in constant turmoil. I exist with a boiling cauldron inside my gut and feel like steam erupts whenever I open my mouth. The steam, when not released, seems to manifest itself in a migraine that lasts for days.

It doesn’t help that I’m not a morning person. I’m not sure if it has to do with the time I was born (3:00am), but my natural clock is with the owls. My brain works better after 11pm; I get more creative, I feel more liberated. There’s energy at night that doesn’t exist in the 9-5 world. It’s like the majority of the people suck up the collective energy of the world during the light-time. At night, it seems there’s more available to fuel my flames. The world surrounds me in quiet and gives my mind a stage to scream.

Every morning, though, I wake up and try to be “on.” There are days that I do it and days I simply feel like I climb uphill. It’s different when you work for yourself or if you’re pursuing a passion that comes from within you. I can sit and write for hours straight, letters, words, stories pouring out of me and not a second of it will feel like work.

At work, I lease out my energy, my creativity, my brain. In exchange for my devotion to the business, I get a paycheck. It’s draining.

My new job has lots of numbers. It’s hard for a letters girl to enjoy numbers, but as the boss says, “the analysis runs the business.” (Funny, I thought we did.) I’m supposed to be creative, yet I struggle daily – often project-to-project, meeting-to-meeting. There’s freedom – but it seems to be confined to a strict box. Like prisoners who get freedom by getting to walk around a yard.

The biggest challenge for me lies in the immaturity factor. The company is small and entrepreneurial and everyone is gung-ho about the company, yet so anti-team spirit. It comes as no surprise – if you lead through fear, condescension and intimidation, you create an army of followers who will throw one another under a bus rather than leave no man behind. I know she thinks it’s healthy to encourage competition, but for a group who spends over 50 hours a week together, it would be nice to think that I was spending it with people that were on my side.

I come in each day prepared to disappoint and expect for someone else to smile when I do. We also keep mistake logs. An example of a mistake is when you budgeted for ,000 and the actual comes in at 5. That’s what life is like here.

My new job has lots of meetings – sometimes 5 per day. Sometimes meetings to schedule other meetings. Everyone sits at their cubes wearing a headset – either the phone kind or the music kind. Walking through the office, there is the office hum of typing and people whispering the familiar script on the phone.

Most of the social interaction I’ve gotten has been in the bathroom; I avoid the kitchen because someone warned me on my first day of the roaches that lurk everywhere. We do have quarterly outings, but the first half of the day is spent reviewing what was done and brainstorming new ways we can do more.

Everything is overcomplicated. No one stops to stand back and look at the big picture; they’ll argue a point for an hour that impacts life not at all. Instead of dividing and conquering, everyone wants a bite of every detail. Like many children starved for attention, we wait for our turn to get a little pat on the back.

We are a beehive in a forest and we are successful enough to make honey to feed everyone in the hive and then some. You would think that would make the Queen Bee happy – and maybe she is – but she certainly acts like the world is an awful place and we are a constant disappointment. To her credit, she doesn’t ALWAYS mean to sound like an angry bitch, but she certainly seems to get enjoyment out of making it harder for us; like punishment because we were “bad little doobies” (tribute to Mrs. Shannon, 7th grade math).

You would think in a company of about 20 people, the leader would come around and say hello to her workers. You could think that – but you would be wrong. Everyone gives a piece of their soul to this company. I know she says ‘thank you’ with a paycheck, but hello would also be nice. She wants to hear nothing of anyone’s life, but thinks nothing of wasting half an hour of my scheduled meeting time divulging her sexual history and emptying out her entire make up bag for inspection. She forgets that she is not your friend for just a minute and shows humanity.

***

I also hope She doesn’t read this, but if she does…

I’m sorry if these words come out hurtful to you; they are my reality and mine alone. The blog is where I can say my side of the story; it is my venue for being defensive without defending myself for being such. The salt on the wound of this situation is that I knew you before I took the job. I believed you when you told me you changed; you told me you had gotten more professional. You interpret professional to be detached, mean, and authoritative. I can’t relate to that sort of leadership. I also can’t relate to someone who stands in front of her team and says I’m paying you a “fuckload of money and I expect a fuckload of shit!”

I hope you know that I’ll still bring my A game. I’ll still respect you in the office. I’ll still be a team player and do what I can – because I need the paycheck.

But I often wonder if you ever look in the mirror? Are you proud of the person you’ve become beyond the businessperson? Is this what you want out of life? Do you want to look back on your life and remember your numbers or do you want to stand back and remember the people that helped you get to the top of your lonely hill? I hope you realize that the life you lived isn’t defined by your bank account.

I wish you were still someone I wanted to call a friend.

My New Job: Writing Dangerously

My new job has lots of numbers. It’s hard for a letters girl to enjoy numbers, but as the boss says, “the analysis runs the business.” (Funny, I thought we did.) Like prisoners who get freedom by getting to walk around a yard.

A Spring Day in Central Park

The grass is at its prime in Central Park – just having drunk three days worth of spring showers. Like a fresh haircut, the blades dance in the wind, glints of sun, like glitter, are sprinkled throughout the Great Lawn.

Overdressed in my late winter parka, I walk amongst the athletes, the tourists, the private high school kids in phys ed. Children run one step in front of the nannies – yet one step behind the mommies on the Blackberries.

I Am a Writer

I never called myself a writer. I never thought I was good enough – clearly limiting myself only by my own battle with perfectionism. I pursued 12-year career in advertising where writing was the PS – rather not the body – of my life.

Finally, they fired me and I found myself in a moment of mental liberation. I was forced into a crossroads of low risk and nothing to lose. With fear eliminated from the equation, I took a chance.

I decided that yes I was going to define myself as a writer.

2,991 Days our Lives Changed Forever

9/11 as a number, when spoken out loud, has become redefined. For most Americans, visually 9-1-1 has always symbolized emergency. After September 11th, 2001, 9/11 represented a day that surpassed emergency.

It became a day I wouldn’t forget as it happened in real time. Soon it evolved into my generation’s JFK question: “Where were you on 9/11?”

Reflections on Being Fired

I was walking near Lincoln Center about a week after I got fired. The weather was glorious and I felt like every breath I took brought me higher and higher. I wanted to hug everyone harder and harder. I had a glow. I was in love with every morsel of life and I finally had time to taste every bite.

My six-year-old son and I were skipping down the Upper West Side when I noticed a familiar face walking beside me. It was Mr. G, a seasoned weatherman (couldn’t resist the pun). I don’t watch the weat

6 Tips For Finding New Job Success

Having goals lined up before you start your new job is a great way to prepare yourself for success. Here are 6 quick tips that will get you started in the right direction:

Ask Questions: Asking a question when you don’t know something is very important. This will save you time and allow you to complete more tasks instead of being knee high in confusion. Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions. Your coworkers and supervisors understand that you may have a period of adjustment as you become accustomed to your new position.

Minimize Personal Business On The Job: During your first months on a new job you should definitely center in on your roles and responsibilities. Drill in and focus.

Be on time, leave on time: A critical part of creating a good first impression is being on time. Working your full scheduled hours and making sure to keep track of time while on lunch is essential. Give yourself extra time if you know it’s necessary.

Network: Don’t be afraid to socialize. You may feel somewhat apprehensive at your new job but casually conversing with your coworkers will show them your personality and begin to build a rapport you will need.

Take Notes: Write things down! It’s a quick way to stay organized with your day to day tasks. Until you become familiar to your new job routine, you may have a ton of other things to deal with in addition to performing well on your job, like finding an apartment or the best route to work. Keep things in order by having a note book for personal matters and work related affairs and bring them everyday.

Attitude: Last but not least, is your attitude. Staying positive while at your new position may be your greatest asset and it will be noticed by others. An enthusiastic new member of the team us always welcomed.

How To Negotiate Salary For A New Job: 5 Salary Negotiation Tips That Work

One of the trickiest parts of getting employed is figuring out how to negotiate salary for a new job. There are just so many things to consider.

After all, you want a high salary but you don’t want to appear self-important. You’re afraid of giving numbers, and yet you dream of increased pay.

Well, you don’t have to worry about those things anymore. If you want to know how to negotiate salary for a new job, simply read this article!

Salary Negotiation Tip # 1: Do Your Research.

So you want to learn how to negotiate salary for a new job? Then you must do your research first. Find out what people in the industry are making.

If you’re going for an entry-level position, find out what entry-levels are making. If you’re going for a managerial position, find out what they’re making. This way, you won’t sound like an idiot when you eventually negotiate your salary for a new job.

Salary Negotiation Tip # 2: Assess Yourself.

Personal assessment is important; and it’s not just so you’ll have something to say at an interview! Knowing your strengths and skills helps you become more confident when negotiating salary for a new job.

You might have certain skills that are useful, but not quite common in the workplace. For example, you might be applying for the writer position at the company, but you also know how to design websites or speak fluently in three different languages. I’d say that would give you a better leverage!

Salary Negotiation Tip # 3: Be Confident.

When talking money, it’s important that you appear confident. Not arrogant, but confident. Demanding a high salary, especially when you don’t have good credentials, will only turn you into a laughing stock.

Salary Negotiation Tip # 4: Refrain From Giving an Exact Amount…Yet.

If you’re not yet sure whether they’ll be hiring you or not, it would be in your best interest not to discuss salary in detail.

You can give a certain range, but you should also add that it’s negotiable and flexible. This way, the company won’t cast your resume aside at once (especially if it turns out that they can’t afford to hire you).

Salary Negotiation Tip # 5: Be Willing To Walk Away.

Finding a decent job with good pay can be challenging. However, that doesn’t mean you have to accept a rate that is beyond low. You might be flexible, but you’re not that desperate.

When a company low blows you, be prepared to walk away. There are other companies out there that will treat you fairly.

Learning how to negotiate salary for a new job can be eye-opening, but the actual experience can vary. Learn all you can from what you have experienced yourself, and use those lessons on your next salary negotiation.

Find a New Job

There are thousands of sincere, dedicated Recruiters available to help you find a new job. Whatever profession you’re in, there are Recruiters who specialize in your industry. Unfortunately, as in all professions, there are hack Recruiters too. The trick is to find a Recruiter who works in your industry, won’t waste your time, and operates ethically.

My advice as a Recruiter with over a decade of recruiting success, is to search for a Recruiter online, or through networks like Linkedin. Beware of the sweat shops who hire new Recruiters only to chew them up and spit them out, battered and bruised because of inadequate training and a poor work environment. How do you spot an operation to avoid? If they demand you come into their office with your resume but carefully sidestep the question of available job opportunities, beware.

If you have extra time, visit this type of body shop operation but be ready for them to try and push you into a job that you were not trained for, that pays less than your industry, and that is not in your best interest. Those organizations hurt the reputation of all Recruiters. If you do visit one, make sure you stick to your goals. If you have a professional presentation and a solid skill set, they should contact employers on your behalf and get you an interview. Your career is important. If they won’t bother doing their job well, walk away. To often they want your resume and personal information for their data bank. Guard your personal information.

Keep contacting Recruiters until you find one with knowledge and experience in your industry. Be prepared to tell them what you want in your next position. How many miles are you willing to commute? Would you take a lateral move? Do you want a large corporation or small to midsize operation? What kind of responsibilities can you handle? Let them know about anyone who has a copy of your resume.

When you present yourself to a Recruiter, describe yourself with facts. Keep your introduction brief; about 30 – 40 seconds. “Hi Recruiter. My name is Sally Smith. I have 7 years of accounting experience working for a small firm. I got my CPA designation last year and have a 4 year degree. Do you have a client who can use someone with my background?” Then be quiet. Let the Recruiter think.

Recruiters have a wealth of knowledge and should guide you through their process. Ask questions and be ready to take action. If you don’t go on interviews you cannot expect a job offer. Always do your best. When you get a job offer, let your Recruiter know if you have any reservations or if there is something missing you want from the employment offer. Recruiters negotiate special deals everyday. The more you understand about how Recruiters work, the better your odds are of finding your dream job.
