The passive job-seeker

Edit Article |

]]>

First off, let me explain to those of you who don’t know – what a ‘passive job seeker’ is.

A passive job seeker is someone who is not unemployed, does not need another job but is open to the possibility of getting a better job.  They are different to most of the regular candidates that apply for lots of jobs on the Internet.  Different in so much as…

…they don’t have a lot time to spare.

…they look at other job opportunities infrequently.

…they’re looking for a better job, not just another job.

…they’re invariably off the market relatively quickly.

These are the types of people that most companies and most recruiters are looking to interview.  So, to those of you still in the ranks of the employed, here’s career management tip number 1 – always be looking for your next career move while you’re still relatively happy in your current job.  It’s better for you and it’s better for the potential new employer.  Much better.  It’s better for you because you can view the job you’re interviewing for with more objectivity than if you were out of work and needed a job to pay the bills.  It’s better for the potential new employer because, for reasons best known to themselves, they will consider you a better worker if you’re not temporarily out of work.  Trust me on this one.

Most companies have problems finding these passive job seekers.  This is one of the reasons why there are so many recruitment agencies feeding off the employment system.  And they are only marginally less worse at attracting candidates than their clients but with more time to process vast numbers of average candidates (the best two or three of which are given a 10 minute ‘makeover’ and presented as “the cream of the crop”), they can sell the notion that these people are in fact the best that is out there.  It’s money for old rope really, but more on that another time.

To save money on communicating their open positions powerfully and building their own specific candidate knowledge banks, many companies put up poorly conceived and badly written ‘job postings’ on job boards.  Some even allow recruitment agencies to put up the same poorly conceived and badly written job postings on job boards on their behalf.  How stupid are they?  Rhetorical question.

So anyway, the passive job seeker doesn’t look at these job boards containing all of these job postings, except, when they’ve had one of those days where they think to themselves that they’re overworked, undervalued and underpaid.  These days happen more regularly than you might think.

So, after getting home at half eight the night before, covering for their incompetent boss, they start perusing one of the job boards on the off-chance that there’s something better out there.  This is the companies and the Recruiters window of opportunity to capture some of these people.

Here’s what happens next.

Since passive job seekers don’t have much time to spare, they only look at the titles of the jobs and the names of the companies on the first or second page of any job board listing or will skim the employment section of a newspaper. So if the job or title or advert doesn’t stand out, the company or recruiter don’t have a chance.

If they get past this, they’ll then read the ad copy. If the job sounds boring or lists the traditional “must-haves” like skills, requirements, years of experiences, academics, industry background, with a few duties and responsibilities mixed in, and they see no difference between that job and the one that their doing at the moment, then the passive job seeker will opt-out.  I mean, we all would really wouldn’t we?

If they read the ad copy and see something different in the employment proposal, chances are they’ll next look at the company or the recruiters website and the detailed job description (if there is one). If this isn’t as convincing as it could be, or not easy to find and review, then the candidate will say goodbye and get on with their job.

However, if the company and/or recruiter manage to get the candidate past these hurdles and get them to send in a CV or an application, and then contrive to not call the candidate back by the next day at the very latest, then their chances of convincing this passive job seeker that they take recruiting new staff seriously, is greatly diminished.

Then the candidate will wish he’d done something more constructive with his time …like repeatedly smashing his head against his desk for 10 minutes.  We’ve all been there, right?

Hiring managers, HR people and recruiters will post on the Internet almost weekly complaining about how difficult it is to find good candidates and bemoaning the fact that they get so many applications from desperate (and/or unemployed) people with little or no relevance to the jobs advertised (I use the term ‘advertised’ very loosely here).

And they also wonder why everyone thinks agency recruiters and inhouse recruiters are mostly just simple telesales people or glorified administrators with no commercial acumen.

Go figure.

How To Easily Get A Job.The Common Mistakes Made By A Job Seeker

Would you like to learn how you can easily get a job?

Imagine finishing your university studies completely confident and prepared for the job market—
Knowing all that will be required of you as a job seeker.

Now I want you to imagine being completely in control of the outcome of your job search activities and landing the job of your dreams, which will make you happy and comfortable…Sound too good to be true?

After you read this short article, you will feel like your fears of never getting a job are almost completely solved, all you will have to do is to go out and get one.

Right off the butt, I want to tell you that getting a job is as easy as mastering the English alphabet. However, it makes me sad whenever I see a bright individual blundering his chances of getting a job by committing mistakes that can be easily avoided.

MYTH: Most job seekers think they can get the job just because they’re good at what they do.

FACT: Wrong! The jobseeker that knows how to present his CV, use the CV to effectively search for that job and how to act during an interview and answer questions well will get the job!
So what does this imply, it implies that the process of getting a job boils down to three things namely, Writing a good CV, using the most effective job search methods and mastering the art of interviews. What are the common mistakes you are bound to commit as a job seeker?

1. Writing a poor CV.

These days employers often receive a lot of CVs for advertised and not advertised jobs. Jobs advertised in national papers can often attract hundreds of applicants. So your CV has to be just that little bit special to stand out if you want to obtain interviews.

Your CV is a very important document; with it rest your hopes and dreams for the future -that next step up the career ladder, a better position, more money, new challenges, etc. Your CV therefore has to represent the best you have to offer if you do not want to miss out on that job you saw advertised or heard of which was ‘perfect’ for you.

However, most job seekers spend a lot of time, effort and some times money, to write a very good CV. When they are through with the writing bit, they then make several copies, which they will attach to each and every Job application they send out. This is a very grave mistake. You should never do this. Each Job you apply for, you should send a customized CV. A CV that is tailored to the requirements of that particular position. In the book titled How To Easily Get Jobs-Interview Questions And Their Right Answers Exposed, The four different types of CVs are shown with guidelines on how to write each particular CV and when to submit which CV. Plus the 15 thing that you should never include in your CV.

If you have customized your CV but doesn’t seem to have the impact you wanted and you’re not getting many interviews, then you should consider the following mistakes you might be committing: Are you aiming for jobs that you aren’t qualified for? Does your CV meet the requirements of an advertisement? Are you older/younger than the stated age range on the advertisement? If you can see no reason why you have been rejected then you should look again carefully at your CV, as this must be the culprit.

2. Using Poor Job Search strategies.

Once you have prepared your CV you are ready to start looking for a job .In Uganda today, there are essentially four ways to find a job. The mistake that most graduate Job seekers do is to use only one method of job hunting. There preferred method is that of submitting application for jobs advertise in newspapers, radio and other print media. However, Over 67% of opportunities in any country are not advertised in the above media. So you should be able to use a method that will help you to uncover the 67% of unadvertised jobs. This method is called Networking and is extensively written about in many books including that written by me. In other words, To easily get a job, you will need to use more than two method of job searching. Faster results will be achieved when you use the four method of job searching.

3. Not Being Specific:

Most job seekers prolong their unemployment period because they lack vision. They do not know what they want. Though a few people have succeeded in getting a job when they just requested for any job, the majority of applications that request for any job will end up in the dustbin, never to be seen again.

You should not just apply for any job, ask for a particular Job. What Job Do I want? You should ask your self the question before you start hunting for the job. If you need help in reviewing your career plans you can get advice from ‘Careers Service. These can be found at most departments at the various schools, institutions and Universities. It is important to have thought through the types of job/career you are seeking. This will help you identify potential employers and target your applications by presenting clearly what you have to offer.

4. Minimal interview skills by the candidate:

Many job seekers I have worked on have confided in me that even though they eagerly wait for the interview appointment to come in, they also hate the night proceeding to it. This is because they are not sure of what their performance at the interviews will be. Answering job interviews is an art that is perfected with preparation, practice and repetition. However, job seekers make a mistake of coming for the interview unprepared and not knowing what to expect.

Before you go for an interview, find out everything you can about the company by reading their annual report if they have one. Re-read your application, thinking through your own career and the questions they might ask you. You should try to anticipate the general questions which they will ask and also prepare some questions to ask them.

To do well at the interview, you will need to convince the interviewer you are technically qualified to do the job. You will also need to show that you are sufficiently motivated to get the job done well and that you will fit in with the company’s organizational structure and the team in which you will work.

You should dress smartly for the interview and should leave home earlier than you need to on the day of the interview – you may be delayed by traffic or for other reasons. Be courteous to all employees of the company. At the interview itself you must be positive about yourself and your abilities – but do not make a mistake to waffle.

In the book How To easily Get Jobs-Interview Questions And Their Right Answers Exposed, You are shown secret techniques, tactics and strategies that you should use to out perform your completion and ACE any job interview. It has over 150 common questions asked at job interview, with the most excellent answer in response to the questions. These questions are a good resource for any one preparing for any job interview.

Well, those are some of the mistakes that are committed during job seeking and I have shown you how you can avoid them so as to easily get a job.

Challenges Confronting Job Seekers In Nigeria

]]>

You will not help but laugh at the treatment usually given to job seekers in the country, there are two types of job seekers in the country, those that already have jobs waiting for them courtesy of “connections” and applicants who have to live on information to pursue search employments processes, I call this group, the true job seekers. This article will especially lay emphasis on these group true job seekers, and how they do their things to gain employments.

A typical job seeker in the Nigeria today must remain awake to information that may lead to his securing one, he does this by buying the Guardian newspapers of Tuesdays and Thursdays edition, and sometimes Punch newspaper as well if he posses qualifications above secondary school level. For persons who are not graduates, he must wake up very early the morning searching for sign-boards that must display “Sales-Girl Wanted: Apply in person” or “Are you beautiful, bold and fluent in English, then your services are needed as a Marketing Executive” Different boards may read different high sounding but usually funny sentences proclaiming demand for workers.

It is therefore not surprising that applicants once describes as Marketing Executives find their way standing all through the day mainly between 7.00am and 6.00pm on the busy roads of the country pursuing and trying to win passers-by to purchase their products. The annoying thing about this employment is that these Marketing Executives who are often given targets, with mandates to sell to passers-by whose minds were not prepared before leaving their homes unimaginable number of these products. Our Marketing Executives are often required to sell within a week the number of products that the entire firm has not sold in 4 years and they must achieve this before they will be paid their paltry salaries which is also ridiculous.

You will be appalled to discover that in the end Marketing Executives are never paid their salaries by unsuspecting employers instead, some of our Marketing Executives accept their fate as dictated by their employers, yes it happens in Nigeria and we experience it everyday, it happens because there are no jobs available and our ladies who hate to prostitute must work to earn monies.

For the graduates from our so-called prestigious universities with high sounding degrees, they solely depend on newspaper advertorials for vacancies, if you are good at studying newspapers, you may secure one soon. It is now common to see youths surrounding vendor stands with papers and biros writing out vacancies they have “hired” from newspaper vendors. Describing what patterns vacancies take in Nigerian newspapers are very vital to enable you understand the difficulty in securing even the worst forms of job positions in many firms in the country. Every job vacancy in Nigeria comes with conditions, which you may never fulfill in your entire life time, thus these conditions makes it possible for those already working to switch over to newer establishments, while fresh job seekers keep seeking and counting on God for  miracles to take place.

Certain of these conditions may require you to be between the age of 19 and 24, and I ask you how often do we see children who graduate from Nigerian Universities within this age, when it is glaring that economic situations of the country is biting your family so hard? Another condition may demand “not less than 5 years experience in a similar position” Where do you get this experience, as a boy of 24 in Nigeria? Who will have given you a first time employment at the age of 22 when you just haven’t got this experience in the first place? Job seekers’ experience in their search for a job makes utter rubbish of securing one in the country.

Securing a job in the Banking firm in this country can be deemed juicy but working in this sector may mean hell for you. Bankers in the country might be considered the busiest set of workers in the country given that they resume 8 00am and call it a day 5.00pm, the usual busy roads of Lagos dictates that they rouse from sleep as early as  5.00am because they have to beat heavy traffics in the state. Bankers work from Mondays to Saturdays, and are never opportune to see daylights outside their offices. Individuals are fast denouncing the positions of “Marketing Executives” in our banking industry; imagine when as a Marketer, you are given unattainable target to fetch millions of naira for the firm, achieving this becomes something else.

Sometimes too, we graduate from the Nigerian Universities to discover that the courses have read are as good as unnecessary in the Nigerian job seekers world, and you entirely regret it when you discover it. It is for this reason that the Banking industry is the last hope for the Nigerian job seekers, graduates of Arabic, English Language, Political Science, Library Studies, Yoruba etc all end up in the Banks. It is also interesting that as a graduate of Science inclined discipline from our University, our society offers you no job placement. Only limited opportunities exist for instance for graduates of Physics-electronic who usually are graduated without practical knowledge.

If you are a job seeker in Nigeria, you need nothing but pray hard, for only good luck will guide you through.

I’ve got traveled everywhere the globe, and while at airports looking forward to my flight, I perpetually attempt to search out a gate where the plane is having mechanical problems, is very late, or was cancelled altogether. And I might move to the gate simply to look at majority of the people undergo the stages of grief: Denial/Shock, Distraction/Panic, Irritation/Anger, Bargaining, and Depressed. I might literally watch the passengers bear, or get stuck in these steps. It was low-cost entertainment and better than airport food. The professional travelers did not panic. They took action and were rebooked nearly immediately through the personal club assistant, a customer service representative, companies travel expert or their PDA. What do these seasoned travelers’ understand that the opposite passengers not grasp, or do?

High CEO’s and professionals as well as seasoned traveler’s understand a secret and execute this secret everyday when hit obstacles – RESILIENCE

Job Seekers initially hit the downsizing, out of labor obstacle that can move them into the stages of grief. They will conjointly hit job-seeking obstacles along their career transition.

Now the key of handling any major amendment is not to avoid these steps for everyone goes through these at some rate. The secret is to rapidly additional through the steps of grief, using only second’s not hours or perhaps days to just accept the current state and acquire to work on your future state. The remedy to is to place Resilience into action.

Resilience is the amount one skill that each one successful Job Seekers posses.

Take a listing of how resilient you’re: Positive, Targeted, Flexible, Organized and Proactive.

Positive

Successful Job Seekers are positive that this can work out and for the better. It can take arduous work and some long hours, however it will and will be done. Along the method you may make some great friends and build your personal network. You’ll learn to try to to without some things and be better for it. In the end you may grow and be stronger and higher positioned to grow personally. You may want to find out some new skills and become better in others and with some study you may get better. You have got the flexibility to learn. You’re positive that with follow executing resilience will help you transition rapidly toward your next opportunity.

I really like the Wizard of Ounceswhen the Wizard hands out gifts to every of Dorothy’s friends who are missing some quality: Courage, Brains, or Heart. As a Job Seeker you too may be missing some key qualities. That’s why you build a team around you. You rent an educator, or mentor; you attend network sessions, training, groups etc. and ask the experts. With a very little training and hanging out with sensible people I am positive you can ask the right questions, learn what you wish to, and be able to plug yourself on-to the “MUST HIRE” List.

Centered

Distractions will happen. Successful Job Seekers keep distractions beneath check. They stay centered on the key actions they need to accomplish and after they would like to accomplish them.

Distractions can happen and sometimes can drag you back into one of the steps of loss. It could be some statement or message that you just process and drags you down. This is often where the facility of resilience will take you thru those grief/loss steps and back specializing in the vital steps that are your future. Learn from the past, but do not live there. Live in the current – Today. And plan on your future opportunity.

Specialize in today. To several Job seekers jump to what I call the attractive part of job seeking – The Resume. The love the promoting, nonetheless forget eight of the most necessary steps every Job seeker must accomplish before ever crafting one word on their resume. Focus is key.

Versatile

Successful Job Seekers are versatile in the sense they use social networks, coaches, and friends for support, keep positive, centered, flexible, organized and proactive. These folks, your team is important for helping you remain resilient.

We additionally notice flexibility when it involves learning new skills, and perfecting your personal whole that matches your target firms needs. As a successful Job Seeker must be higher than the competition, therefore forget what worked within the past. You want to be flexible at perfecting your stories, and private whole to you market and their needs to use social networks and relationships. It is time to rebrand, perfect, sharpen, and gift a dynamic complete not a cut and paste resume and cover letter blasted out to the net void.

Organized

Successful Job Seeker is organized with various tools that structure all the activities of your job campaign. This is often an space that many folks struggle and fail. Failure to totally utilize these tools will dramatically reduce your return on investment. Each person will have a Vision, Mission, Goals and pain messages that can direct their activities. Every activity is structured to support the next activity and tied to short and full term goals.

Also organization can facilitate specialize in the utilization of the prime search methods permitting a come back on investment. Corporations have systems that help them accomplish more and thus you want to additionally have tools/systems to manage your contacts and therefore the selling materials disbursement and management.

Proactive

Successful Job Seekers are proactive by planning their work and operating their plan. They are working 30 or additional hours each week. They’re using ONLY the top strategies that come results not Web job boards that are the least effective strategy and have a coffee ROI. They assist others and take time for themselves throughout downtime. They put resilience into action each day.

Keep in mind the key skill Job Seekers must have in executing a successful career transition is resilience. Having resilience will not mean you won’t get depressed, angry, fearful, or upset. It will mean you will acknowledge it quicker and move through it faster and reframe the difficulty as an opportunity.

Avoiding online Job board / job site SCAM: A career advice for job seekers

The Internet has proved to be the most effective and convenient means job seekers use to stay connected with employers. Statistics shows that 88% of job seekers start their job search online. This percentage relies heavily on job boards as an effective place of finding job openings. Some visit job boards and online recruitment sites on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, some of these job boards have become a safe heaven for scammers and people with different nefarious activities which includes:

* Identity fraud
* Scam and illegal financial solicitation from job seekers
* Spamming
* Online theft to mention just a few.

In recent times there have been increasing cases of job site scam with job seekers being the victim. It has indeed become one of the greatest threats steering job site users on the face. While job seekers and employers who use these sites now live in constant fear of not falling a victim, the job site owners on the other hand are having sleepless night thinking of ways to secure their site from hackers and Cyber thiefs.

Ironically, this trend has worsened since past two years. The perpetrators sometimes prove invincible. To the Internet security experts it is a case of ” the more you look the less you see” said Bradley Tamselis of Sunlian Internet Security systems Inc.”

Cases also abounds where job databases were broken into by Internet criminals in an attempt to hack into the users information database. When they do succeed in getting access to this private information, the Internet fraud stars pose to be genuine employer. They often use different tactics to lure job seekers. The common tactics they use includes:

· Bogus, attractive and irresistible job offers to unsuspecting job seekers:
· International job offers Most of this social menace is common and prevalent on free job sites, social networking sites and free classified sites such as craigslist, facebook, etc. The Internet corn lords trick their victims with bogus and attractive job offers.

These are fake offers with criminal intention and intent to defraud unsuspecting desperate job seekers. They usually request job application processing fees from job seekers. These fees sometimes range from 0 to 00 or even more.

We all owe it as a duty to protect helpless and vulnerable job seekers.

Job site owners, employers and jobseekers all have a role to play in the fight against cyber crime and jobsite fraud. Job seekers are the most vulnerable. They need to be protected. While they also owe it as a duty to protect themselves. Job Seekers can take the following steps to protect themselves.

* They should always keep their login information safe and confidential
* They must not make any payment in any form or by any means to any employer requesting money as a precondition to hire them.
* Apply to overseas job with caution
* Report suspected employer to the appropriate authorities.

The Job site owner can protect job seekers by making their job site secure and safe. They can put bold inscriptions warning job seekers to avoid falling pray to scammers who want them to pay money through any means such as moneygram, western Union money transfer, wired transfer, checks or other forms of money transfer.

All hand must be on deck to fight this social ill, which is gradually affecting  job site users globally.

Recruitment Trends in India – What Employers and Job Seekers are Looking For

]]>

Like any other industry, the recruitment “industry” is cyclical. IT follows the cycles of other industries to a large extent. But the recruitment industry has a significant advantage because of the “products” it promotes – skilled manpower. For any organization, in any kind of economy, skilled manpower is absolutely essential.

In a booming economy, companies in India were offering high salaries and attractive incentive packages to attract the best talent to their payroll. However, as the economic downturn hit countries around the world, Indian companies suffered too. Lay-offs, salary cuts and deferred payments became commonplace. A vast pool of skilled, un-employed candidates was created during this recession.During this period, hiring was extremely limited and companies could cherry-pick from the cream of the crop.

Now that the economy, atleast in India, seems to have stabilised and started clawing back to what is was in 2008, some striking trends are being observed in the recruitment industry. These trends have their roots in the recession and it’s effects on job seekers and recruiters. Some of the key trends have been discussed below.

Contract Hiring
Many companies that cut back to bare bones staff during the worst of the recession are now beginning to hire contract workers. Contract hiring makes sense when the economic situation is still volatile and a company does not want to commit its financial resources to a full-time permanent hire. Also, contract employees are usually brought on board with the idea of handling one set project or providing a select skill set. So the process of hiring a contract employee is usually a little more streamlined as well.

Just-In-Time Hiring
Today, the key focus of talent acquisition teams has changed from hiring generic skilled resources as strategic buffers to meet future ramp-ups to hiring just-in-time based on business demand. This ensures that lead times are reduced for new employees and costs are reduced for the company since they are not maintaining a bench. Just-in-time hiring is fast becoming the watch word in many companies and is a beneficial trend that is set to embed itself firmly into the recruitment industry.

Consulting / Freelancing
Becoming a freelancer requires a great deal of domain experience, commitment, integrity, flexibility and confidence. Though the going might be tough initially, returns can be very good provided a freelancer is good at the job and enterprising enough. To become and independent consultant, a person has to have a command over his field of experience and a relatively good network in the industry. Freelancing and consulting may form a small percentage of the recruitments in India, but recent trends show more professionals inclined towards them

Career Advice for Job Seekers

The economy is rough nowadays, and with mass lay-offs and plenty of discouragement, its a good idea to look for career advice to change your focus to something you can be passionate about. The difference between a job and a career is that the first option is labor oriented and usually does not have much advancement involved, and the second option is passion oriented, allowing you to advance and grow using skills that you have learned through some kind of formal or technical education. If you do not know what direction to go into, seeking an advice is an excellent first step to organizing your goals while helping you head down a path that will encourage and motivate you to succeed.

As you begin your quest for a career, you may not have an idea about what kind you should be pursuing. An easy way to determine what direction to take, and the first bit of advice to edge you forward, is to think about what you have always loved to do with your time. There are activities that you take part in because you enjoy them as hobbies, and activities that you take part in because you could see yourself doing them to make money seriously. Those activities that you could see yourself turning into a career should be your first stepping stone to paving the road to success for yourself.

The second point of advice for is to consider going back to school or taking some kind of training to help enhance your skills. You may not be equipped with the necessary skills and education to begin your future plans right away, and finding a job without the right skills will be nearly impossible. It is best to research what colleges and institutions you can attend that will allow you to get a degree, certification or license in the field that you are interested in. Choose a college or program that you will enjoy going to in a location that makes you excited to be there. This will help to motivate you to continue on with your studies.

The final point of career advice is to learn how to negotiate your salary so that you can live a lifestyle that is enjoyable. Research the high, average and low incomes for your career so that you know what kind of base salary to expect with your experience and skill set. The skills you have obtained my be high end skills that allow you to select a salary that compliments what you have learned. Be confident when you negotiate your salary, but not cocky. It is always better to be humble than to come off as obnoxious or snobby, so keep your attitude in check and enjoy making the money that reflects what you are worth.

Making Your Business Convenient with Internet Faxing

Critical Thinking and Creativity Key: Job-Seekers Need to Be Prepared

]]>

In a recent study1  of corporate employers critical thinking and creativity were indicated as important skills they need from new hires. The catch is that companies are not providing training for these skills, they expect new employees to come prepared in those areas.

When surveyed, more than 40% of employers indicated a “high need” for critical thinking but do not provide training in that area, and nearly 70% indicated a “high need” for creativity but do not provide training in that area. Additional areas that were considered important include ethics and professionalism, but training programs also are not provided. There is a trend here. Companies want people with strong basic and applied skills, but they are less willing to provide that training for new hires.

Even when employers are interested in offering training, it’s especially difficult to train for the creativity and innovation type of skills. They are tough to understand and define, and therefore hard to develop programs that meet the need. And there are wide discrepancies amongst what the business community is asking for from educators. Many programs are focused on basic skills, applied skills or STEM skills (science, technology, engineering, math). While creative thinking may be a part of this training, there is little educational focus on creativity and innovation.

This reluctance to provide workforce readiness training can have an especially negative effect on younger workers and recent graduates. Many employers are not in the position to provide training for basic skills like math or reading comprehension, or applied skills key to the specific job, let alone these more nebulous creative skill sets. Not only are younger workers competing with more experienced workers for fewer jobs, but if they are also lacking key skills they can be at a major disadvantage in getting the jobs that are available.

What does this all mean? If businesses consider skills like creativity, innovation, professionalism and strong ethics to be important, but they are not providing training for those skills, then it is left to the job seeker to build the skills on their own. The era of starting somewhere, being trained on the job and staying there for thirty years is gone. Each individual is responsible for their career, their growth, and yes, their training.

Your Career: It’s All About Results

“Never mistake activity for achievement.” –John Wooden This quote by John Wooden is great to keep in mind when talking about your career. Experience is great, education and training is usually required and always useful, industry knowledge helps, but in the end it’s all about the results. When you’re talking to a prospective employer, the main question they’re asking themselves (and probably you) is “did you deliver results before, and can you do it again for me?” People are hired based on p

Mistakes Job Seekers Make Series: Resumes

What would a discussion about job seeking be without talking about the resume? The resume is the most tangible aspect to job hunting and seems to be the place everyone runs to first. Creating an effective, powerful resume is within everyone’s grasp.

I’m going to focus this article not so much on a list of issues, but rather on a philosophical element that seems to be missing in the job seeker when putting together their resume. I will quickly list the most prevalent issues first, then get to the element I’m discussing.

- The most common problems I see with resumes:
o Too long. Longer than 2 pages; or it’s 2 pages with small font in an attempt to cram as much as possible in 2 pages.
o Too vague. Uses vague terms, doesn’t really tell the reader what position they’re after or leaves you guessing what they actually did.
o Says almost nothing. So brief it looks like they spent 5 minutes whipping it up. Suggests that either the applicant has nothing to offer, never really worked or is incapable of understanding their own assets.
o Doesn’t really tell the story. Talks about responsibilities, nothing about accomplishments.

Now that we have that out of the way, I’d like to outline the philosophical aspect to this that I think will be far more helpful. The philosophical piece I’m talking about is this: you are selling yourself to a hiring manager. You have to appeal to the hiring manager, not only at a logical level, but also at an emotional one. Let’s break this concept down:
- Selling Logically. You are selling yourself. You are trying to help the hiring manager solve a problem, which is that they have work that needs to be done. That work will help move the business forward in some manner. The logic you are appealing to with your resume is that they want to know the following things:
o Do you have the background that would suggest you can perform the job?
o Will you be able to perform in other areas of the business? I.e., can you either learn new things or have a depth to you that suggests you can work beyond this immediate scope of work?
o Are you a risk? Risk can vary. The hiring manager would like to think you will stay on board long enough for it to be worth hiring you.
- Selling Emotionally. Decisions to hire are like dating and marrying. Once the initial screening has taken place and they decide you might be worth serious consideration, the emotional part kicks in. As with any selling, there has to be a reason to consider buying in the first place (the logic), but the decision gets made at an emotional level. You are appealing to aspects like: avoiding pain – gaining pleasure – ease of doing things – solving a problem – being cool (ego) the list goes on. When you are appealing to the emotional side of the decision, they want to know the following:
o Will we like working with you?
o Does your history suggest you perform well and consistently?
o Will I/we work well with you?
o Do you have a good work ethic? Shared values?

If you are truly thinking about this process and what the hiring manager is thinking about, then you need to do the following in your resume:
- Use key words. If you are responding to a posting or a discussion, make sure you repeat some of the key words they use. Your resume will be found easier and will capture their attention.
- Emphasize. Don’t just list your responsibilities, but put size, shape and texture to them.
- Emphasize. Tell them about your accomplishments. They want to know you can deliver and just how well you work. Again, size, shape and texture by adding in things like volume, numbers, results, and commentary from higher ups, customers or peers.
- Weave your story. Who are you? What are you known for? Make that obvious in your resume. Don’t make the hiring manager work to figure out how great you are. They don’t have the time to do that. Answer their questions before they toss out your resume.

Most of the time your resume is the first point of contact with your potential place of employment, which means you want it to capture their attention. Don’t be inhibited in letting it tell a powerful story – your story. We tend to be a bit shy when it comes to “blowing our own horn,” but you have to look at it differently. You aren’t bragging. There is a big difference between bragging and telling your story so it draws the manager in at both the logical and emotional level. If you don’t do it, who will?
