7 Interview Techniques That Will Get You Hired

Despite all the advances in technology and communications these days, the traditional rules still hold when it comes to interview techniques that will get you hired.  Whether you’re applying to a global corporation or a small company, the most important part of an interview is that you have a winning presentation.  This is usually the key factor in determining whether you get the job.

Once you have created an effective resume and have sent your resume to prospective employers, the next step is to try and obtain an interview.  This can be done by phone or in person.  Chances are you will first meet an administrative assistant or receptionist.  This person could be the key to your future in terms of helping you to get an interview or providing information about the company, so remember to be polite and friendly.

Once an interview is scheduled, your personal appearance and behavior are critical factors which could decide whether your job search is successful. 

Here are 7 important steps to help you improve your interview techniques.

Interview Techniques #1 — Proper Preparation

To make sure you’re on time for the interview, find out ahead of time where the interview is and how to get there.  Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed and get there on time.  As a matter of courtesy, make sure your cell phone is turned off before the interview.

Plan to dress in a manner which is appropriate for the job.  Your appearance will determine the first impression the interviewer has of you.  Take care in your grooming before the interview, and be aware of your body language during the interview.  Good posture will help to give an overall good impression.

Interview Techniques #2 — Do the Research

Use every possible resource to learn about a company before you interview there.  You should be prepared to answer question about why you’re interested in the company or what you’ve heard about it.   Make sure you know what the company does and if possible a little bit about its history.  Be familiar with the company profile.

While it’s a good idea to prepare some answers to questions ahead of time, avoid memorizing your responses.  You need to sound unscripted and as natural as possible.  Rehearse an overview of what you want to say, but keep it spontaneous.

Interview Techniques #3 — Keep your Cool

When you meet the interviewer, remember to look him or her in the eye and be prepared to return a handshake if offered.  A polite greeting and friendly smile are in order.  Only take a seat after it’s offered.  Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you.    Keep your demeanor and comments positive.

Interview Techniques #4 — Sell Yourself

As you’re being interviewed, answer all questions as honestly as possible.  Honesty and sincerity are both important interview techniques. Make your answers concise and not unnecessarily wordy.  Do your best to convey to the interviewer what type of employee you will be and what you will offer the company.  When asked about previous employers, stay as positive as possible.

If this is your first job, don’t be intimidated by your lack of experience.  Emphasize your skills and talents, and let the employer know that you are confident and eager to learn.

One of the most important interview techniques is to see through the eyes of the employer.  If you were the one doing the hiring, what qualities would you look for?  What benefit would the employer gain in hiring you?

Lastly, don’t be afraid to sell yourself, but at the same time avoid the appearance of over confidence.  Project an air of confidence without sounding like a know-it-all.

Interview Techniques #5 — Ask the Right Questions

Show the interviewer that you know the right questions to ask.  Express an interest in knowing exactly what your responsibilities will be.  If you come across an interviewer who does all of the talking, don’t be intimidated.  Politely try to ask questions which will give you the chance to discuss your qualifications for the job.

Interview Techniques #6 — The Wrap Up

As the interview comes to a close, make sure that you’ve covered all the important points.  This is not the time to ask about salary and benefits.  Save those questions for the job offer or follow up interview.

Summarize you strengths and skills and re-emphasize your positive traits.  Find out what the next steps are in the interview and job decision process.  Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you and make sure to leave a final good impression. 

Interview Techniques #7 — The Follow Up

After the interview, another of the important interview techniques is to follow up with a thank you note to each person who interviewed you.  Thank him or her for their time and for giving you the opportunity to apply for a job.

As a Hiring Manager …

The purpose of this article is not intended to list the top 10 or 15 tips to ‘ace’ an interview. It is intended to highlight  the criteria potentially influencing the outcome of a job interview from the perspective of a corporate manager. As a former Director of Professional Services with the 3rd largest Information Technology Corporation in the world, I was accountable for IT staffing as well as strategic resource planning and client pre and post-sale technical support. Approximately 50% of the resumes received were from candidates referred directly to me through networking channels (banking networks, clients, business partners, strategic alliances, and in-house referrals).

I either met directly with selected ‘short-list’ candidates or passed their resume onto other internal departments for consideration in alternative roles. I met with candidates of ‘interest’ for contingency purposes should potential openings emerge. Whether filling an open requisition or interviewing candidates of ‘interest’, there were several consistent factors which framed the ‘critical mass’ in my overall assessment of the candidate. The purpose of this article is to share the rationale I employed when interviewing candidates. I have endeavored to prioritize influencing factors from worst case to best case scenarios.

WORST CASE SCENARIOS

Poor Initial Impression (The Potential 10 Second Victim)

From the moment I met the candidate and shook their hand, I always presented a positive, upbeat attitude, and, a big smile to place the candidate immediately at ease.  An interviewer can easily be influenced and ‘prejudiced’ based upon the individual’s apparel, grooming, exposed body art, and, a myriad of other factors. Unless their appearance is categorized as a bit extreme or ‘radical’, I would extend the same level of courtesy and professionalism that would be afforded to all potential candidates, allowing each of them every opportunity to present and market themselves.

As a matter of policy, most companies are quite ‘image conscious’ and explicitly desire to project a well groomed, professional image to their clients and to the public. If the candidate has totally missed the mark with their appearance, the interviewer must be candid and communicate this information to the candidate (as I would do). The interview would subsequently be rather short!  The overall initial impression conveyed to the interviewer within the first 5-10 seconds will invariably dictate the direction and length of the interview. In rather exceptional instances, it’s too late for the candidate to reschedule and head to the nearest shopping mall.

Disastrous Mistakes (The Potential 60 second Victim)

As with every individual, each interviewer has their own unique idiosyncrasies, norms, and guidelines as it applies to the interview. Any candidate can fall victim to a ‘disastrous mistake’ as deemed essential and compulsory by the interviewer. Some of these serious oversights in judgment (in no particular order) are:

Arriving Late – As a courtesy, a call from the candidate within a reasonable period of time advising me that they would be late is acceptable. Without advance notification, and only if exceptional circumstances prevailed, candidates arriving 15 minutes after their scheduled interview were dismissed. Being on-time for the interview is an excellent ‘litmus test’ for being reliable on the job!
Lack of Eye Contact – Not maintaining ‘eye contact’ with the interviewer and not smiling, is frankly, perplexing. Every member of an organization should be in ‘Sales Mode’ regardless of their capacity.  You can’t sell if you can’t look someone in the eye!  Lack of eye contact detracts from developing a rapport and may have a negative influence on the length of the interview.
Walking Into an Interview ‘Cold’ – Not committing the time to perform your ‘due diligence’ of researching the organization is inexcusable. The candidate may associate the company only with one specific product or service. This attitude does not impart a high level of confidence with the interviewer. Invariably, ‘What do you know about us?’ , is a staple question to expect. Being vague and not concise in your response is not a positive indicator.
An Unsuitable Match – Your Skills and Experience must be consistent with the content in your resume. A hiring manager or discerning interviewer will easily detect whether your qualifications are consistent with your resume within 2 minutes. Incorporating several keywords from a job description to target your resume is commonplace. Misleading the interviewer with false or erroneous resume content does not bode well for the candidate.
Negative Remarks about a Previous Employer – Typically raises a large ‘Red Flag’. The hiring manager is looking for a candidate that is positive, self-confident, and enthusiastic. These traits are not consistent with a candidate who criticizes their prior employer. Negative comments are viral in nature and not consistent with a team player.
Asking Prematurely About Salary -  Salary should only be discussed (during the early stages of the interview cycle), if initiated by the interviewer. Salary and benefits will be discussed when the company is definitely interested in you.

Poor Communication Skills (The Potential 5 Minute Victim)

Effective communication skills, written and oral, are mandatory in any industry or market sector. An effective communicator must capably broadcast their marketability and inform employers how their qualifications match the job’s description and responsibilities. The interviewer is seeking clarity and a sense of purpose during the interview. If the candidate is not articulate, persuasive, concise, and to the point – it’s unlikely that their prospective clients and co-workers will be influenced and persuaded.

Hypothetically, whether participating in trade shows, internal meetings, or simply sending an email, proficient communication skills are a necessity to market your ideas, establish credibility and earn respect. The inability to communicate effectively is another influencing factor that the candidate can fall victim to after just a few direct poignant questions from the interviewer. Typically, the astute interviewer will always afford the candidate several minutes to adjust and allow the anticipated nervous anxiety to dissipate before proceeding with relevant conversation. Comparable to the scenario under ‘Initial Impression’, poor communication skills will have a direct negative bearing on the length of the interview.

Being Over-Enthusiastic

Being enthusiastic is a desirable quality. Being ‘over-enthusiastic’ or ‘overly-aggressive’ can convey a ‘mixed bag’ of emotions to the interviewer such as – being desperate, anxious, hyperactive, and perhaps, troubled. Although you’re actively in the process of marketing yourself, cliches such as ‘I will contribute 110% and make you a more profitable company’, are rather bold,  ambitious statements for most candidates unless you’re armed with a track record to prove it! I had the privilege and honor of meeting coach Lou Holtz, former prominent head football coach for Notre Dame, the New York Jets, and other NCAA teams, during a corporate sales rally. One of his many notable quotes is – ‘If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven’t done anything today’. Be careful about being overzealous.  A committed ‘team player” is consistently making a contribution to ensure corporate goals and objectives are achieved!

PREFERENTIAL SCENARIOS

A ‘Positive Attitude’

Employers want to hire someone who is positive, enthusiastic, and able to meet and deal with challenges. A positive attitude is one of those highly appealing traits which is quite contagious and quickly detected by the most discerning interviewer. Candidates with a positive attitude are typically more appealing and exhibit a superior level of self-confidence, poise, and composure. They tend to inspire others with their passionate demeanor and teamwork. Based on my experience, candidates with a positive attitude:

Readily accept challenges and display a superior level of adaptability.
Exude an elevated level of self-confidence and versatility.
Are resourceful and tend to make an early contribution by applying their relevant skills and experience.
Positively influence other team members with their enthusiasm and commitment.
Are more aggressive and focused in marketing themselves and their ideas.

Chemistry

Establishing a rapport with the interviewer plays a significant role during the interview process. People want to hire those candidates they feel most comfortable with. Chemistry between the candidate and interviewer is a consolidation of multiple characteristics which include – personality, appearance, composure, a positive attitude and self-confidence. Such qualities instinctively impart a highly positive impression with the interviewer,  which collectively can be categorized as the ‘likeability factor’.

Chemistry is a powerful stimulus that will often influence the direction and line of conversation during the interview process. A bond or mutual trust is engaged which often displaces the typical queries from the interviewer. There is no magic formula for instigating this bond. Invariably, armed with the requisite credentials, chemistry will typically have a positive influence during the selection process. 

Ask Thoughtful Questions

An interview is not intended to be a ‘one way street’. It’s appropriate to ask the interviewer questions in moderation. The keyword is ‘moderation’ – not reversing roles and making the interviewer the interviewee! As a manager, I valued questions which were thoughtful, perceptive, and incisive. Such questions would bolster my impression of the candidate and their foresight.  A few such questions included:

Consistent record of corporate growth and profitability? 
Is this a new position? (If a result of termination, ask why a person was terminated.)
What is the process and frequency for performance appraisals?
What differentiates you from your competitors?
What is your vision of the corporation in the next 3-5 years?
What is your time-frame for selecting a candidate to fill the position?

In Summary

Always be Professional, Courteous, and Prepared. You are marketing yourself,  don’t try to be someone you’re not.  Remember, in addition to your expertise and skills, your personality is another vital factor that differentiates you from other candidates and influences how an interview progresses. Use it to your full benefit!

How To Build Your Business With Radio, TV, and Print Interviews

One fast and easy business building strategy for solo professionals is to get interviewed on radio, the Internet, television, and in print media. It’s easier than ever to catch a request for an interview, what with YouTube, BlogTalk Radio, and Internet TV channels. With Webcam and VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technologies, you might well get the chance to be on radio or TV anywhere in the world without leaving your office. This series of articles will cover everything you need to know to deliver an interview with ease and in a way that will make you welcome on shows and in print media, too. I’ll show you the five key steps of pro interviewing, along with these tips:

1) How you can “drive” the interview in a direction you want to go
2) What the people interviewing you REALLY want from you
3) How to create marketing opportunities right in the interview
4) How to recycle your interviews to build more presence for your business.

First, though, let’s talk about where giving interviews fits into your business. A successful entrepreneur has three things going that ensure business success. These components are a solid business plan with financial projections that take you where you want to go, a creative and low-cost marketing strategy for the business, and a willingness to remove any personal blocks that keep the business from succeeding. Each component is equally important to your business.

Interviewing is a part of your business’s marketing strategy. If you are unsure or resistant to thinking about interviewing as a way to showcase your expertise and experience, you more than likely have inner blocks that are in your way. Working to change that is a part of personal growth. For solo professionals who decide to do it, interviewing can be easy, fun, and help you build your business.

Before you begin to accept interview opportunities, you’ll need to put together a simple media kit or media page on your website. As a beginning, this should include:
1) A head shot of you (both black & white and color) that can be downloaded from your website or sent as a .jpg file in an e-mail
2) A brief (250 words) bio about you and what you do
3) A list of topics you can speak about
4) A list of your speaking and media experience (if you have any).

Pulling together this simple media kit will allow you to quickly respond to a request for an interview. You can refer the person to the media page on your website, or e-mail the information quickly.

There are five key steps to interviewing like a pro. Here they are, in the order you will probably use.
1) Know your goal.
2) Pick gigs based on your goal.
3) Prep the call.
4) Answer questions briefly but strategically.
5) Follow up diligently.

If you follow each step, you’ll find yourself quickly and easily handing interviews and benefiting from them in more ways than one. Each step helps ensure that your interview will be of benefit to the person interviewing you and to your business. Any time a solo professional can take an action that has a double benefit, it’s sure to be a winner!

Know Your Goal
Just as with anything else you do in business, being interviewed takes your time away from other things you could be doing. You won’t be getting paid, but you still do want a return on your investment of time and sharing of your expertise. Setting a goal for each interview you decide to give will help you get a return.

Ask yourself why you want to do this particular interview, and what you would like to get out of it. There are at least five ways to benefit, and you can probably hit two of them with each interview. The first goal is to build visibility for your business. Think about where and how much the interview will be publicized, the likely size of the listeners or audience, and how much introduction you are likely to receive.

Gaining credibility is a second goal. No one is going to ask you to be interviewed if they think you have nothing of value to offer their listeners or audience. Just by doing the interview, you gain credibility. It’s a good idea to keep a list of all the places you’ve done interviews, and add this to your media page. Reporters and others who are always looking for guests will be impressed that you’ve interviews and will be grateful to find someone who knows the ropes. Just like many other things in the business world, doing interviews can create its own energy. Word spreads that you are both interesting and willing, and you will get more opportunities once you break the ice.

A third goal for doing interviews is to build your list of prospects. Especially if you are an Internet-based business (or have an Internet-based component to your business) constantly building your list is a key concern for you. For Internet businesses, a list of potential customers is the goose that lays the golden egg. For businesses that are not Internet-based, their database of contacts and prospects is also important.

How does interviewing help you build your list? Many times, the person interviewing you will require people who want to listen in on the call or radio show to register ahead of time, even if the call is free. The interviewer may be building his own list using this strategy. He may need to know roughly how many people to expect on a telephone interview so that he can reserve enough phone lines through his conference call provider. He may want to collect information about the industry his listeners are coming from. Whatever the reason, there is often an opportunity to share this information and build your own list, too. If you do this, make sure that when a prospect registers for the event she is told that registering means she will receive the call-in access information and that she will receive a free subscription to your own electronic newsletter (e-zine). Make sure that you operate within the Federal laws regarding e-mails and SPAM.

Even if the person interviewing you doesn’t require a registration to listen in on the event, you can still build your list right on the call. Your bio should include information about your website’s URL. Include a statement something like, “Be sure to go to my website and subscribe to my e-zine, for you’ll receive valuable marketing tips several times a month.”

Product development is the fourth goal you can meet by doing interviews. Once the interview is done, there will likely be a recording of it. Viola! You have a product, a half-hour or hour-long interview about a particular topic that you can give away as an MP3 file, burn to a CD and sell, or have transcribed and make part of a product bundle. Interviewing is a quick and easy way to build up a library of low-cost products that can create a passive income stream for you. Agree ahead of time that you will get to share the audio file of the interview with the person who interviews you. The majority of times, this is understood at the outset – that both of you can use that resource in any way you want. Having the file is useful, for you can create audio clips from it to use in advertising or presentations along with using it as a product to give away or sell.

Finally, you may have a goal to make a special offer to the audience during an interview. Most hosts will be more than willing to take a brief time during the interview to let you offer something special to their listeners. This helps the host become known as someone who offers special deals or surprises, which in turn builds their audience. For you, it can be a way to test out a new product or service with an audience, or to raise some quick cash by offering one of your services with a special add-on for the same price. To make special offers effective, limit the time it is available (usually that day or 24 hours only) and/or the quantity offered. Build a special link in your website for this special offer, and announce it on the call, leading the audience to browse to your website, purchase the offer, and perhaps browse the rest of your website, too.

Applying for a job? Don’t get caught off guard by surprising questions thrown at you due to poor job interview preparation. Avoid giving out answers that are considered a no-no in an interview by preparing a good game plan. Your success rate at landing the position will depend largely on your job interview preparation. Here are some job interview tips that will surely leave a positive impression on your future boss.

Communicate Confidence

You should be able to clearly express your strengths, goals, and work experiences because these are the most common questions asked by interviewers. If you are prepared to answer without stammering, then that shows that you are confident in what you are saying which makes the interviewer have confidence in what you’re saying too.

Dress For Success

How you dress for your job interview will definitely say something about yourself. Many sites and people suggest you dress different ways for different jobs. I think that’s a mistake. You should bring your “A” to every interview. I once interviewed for a part time retail position in the same suit and tie I would interview for a office job in. After I was hired the manager told me that I probably would have gotten the job anyway but that he was impressed that I took it serious enough to dress for the interview. Make sure that you dress professionally for a job interview because the first thing that your future employer will notice is the way you carry yourself and what you are wearing.

Do Your Research

You should find out the background of the company that you are applying to. Ensure that you are well informed of the company’s goals and principles so that you will be able to answer in line with their guiding principles. Internet forums specific to your field or even to the company you are applying to can provide really helpful job interview tips. Read them well and even practice an interview session with a family member or friend.

On Time, Every Time

Make sure that you arrive on time for your interview. By being on time, it means that you should be there ten to fifteen minutes earlier. Coming in earlier than that is not advisable. Furthermore, being late is no-no and will easily leave a bad impression on your interviewer. It shows that you are not taking the potential job opportunity seriously. If you are late to the interview which is supposed to be important, how will you treat everyday work deadlines? Remember that these are professional people and they value time so show your respect to their time by arriving on time.

Build A Rapport

If you are able to get the name of your interviewer, use it during the interview session. If you are unsure of your interviewer’s name, make a call to the office and ask for it before the interview date. Also, do not forget to bring another copy of your resume just in case your interviewer asks for it and be prepared as well with a list of character references. Another good job interview tip is staying calm and relaxed. Being nervous will not help you in any way in getting the job you are applying for. It is okay to ask the interviewer to clarify the question if you do not understand it the first time. It is better to ask than give out an answer that is not well thought of.

Although interviews are supposed to make you talk, avoid blabbing. Talking is different from blabbing. When you blab, you speak of things that are not related to the question. A straight and clear answer is always the best. Make sure that you have given enough time for your interview preparation to avoid being nervous and cramming when the interview day itself has arrived. A guide to conducting focus interviews…a necessary management consulting skill

A management consultant’s primary objective is to solve a business problem. Their primary tool to accomplish this is the ability to probe and ask questions. A lot of this probing is informal and takes place in the form of numerous conversations. Yet, there are times when a more formal and focused approach is required. That is called the focus interview. This article covers the reasons for conducting such an interview, how to do it correctly and the pitfalls commonly experienced.

Focus interviews have four primary objectives:

To gain a thorough understanding of the interviewees role and responsibilities.
To get an individual’s perceptions of areas of opportunity and potential barriers to improvement.
To build commitment to and ownership of the change program.
To “make a friend” — gain support for additional assistance and involvement.

The focus interview helps the management consultant focus on opportunities. It accomplishes this in a variety of ways:

Provides the consultant with initial direction for further studies.
Helps to establish a theme – what kind of project is needed.
War stories and testimonials provide proof that need for improvement exists.
Provides an opportunity to gain perceptual or job-related data.

Never forget that the focus interview is also your interview and is an important step in building the management consultants image:

First impressions of the team and its methods are critical.
Opportunity to: “defuse the threat”.
Generates excitement and anticipation for the project.
Solidifies broader buy-in and ownership of the need for change.

When conducting interviews remember that assessing tone, body language etc can provide strong indications of whether the consulting engagement will be successful. The focus interview therefore provides insight into:

Deeper understanding of culture and sub-cultures.
View of the breadth and depth of managerial skill and sophistication.
Clients’ perception of probable success.
Index of the readiness for or resistance to change.
View of informal systems and networks.

Remember to prepare well so that you have a defined outcome in mind, can focus the interviewee and are sufficiently prepared to catch “red-flags” and probe further:

Level of detail must be sufficient.
Format must be easy to review later for findings.
Content must be meaningful and specific to interviewee’s department and experience.
It is essential to understand:Departmental functions.
Departmental performance.
Opportunities for improvement.
Relation to broader project.

When capturing responses, be prepared to dig in for detail. Opinions are nice, but hard data can be compared, verified and presented:

Obtain complete answers to all open-ended questions.
Specifics for war story data (e.g., data, names, etc.).
Bullets written in narrative form.
Logical and consistent perceptions.
Get to the real issues.

Remember that you work in a team. The last thing YOU would want is a colleague’s interview notes which cannot be understood. So don’t make the same mistake. Even if you work alone, remember the power of consulting is accumulated knowledge and experience. Write up the notes so they can be easily cross-referenced years from the day of the interview:

Use interview form-plus lined paper.
Print only – legibly.
Reference text to bullets.
Highlight hot buttons (critical items for further review).
Write up bullets by card numbers on separate sheets.
What is he/she really saying?
Capture direct quotes whenever possible.
Probe to examine real issues.

Always remember that you have no more than 90 minutes (if you are lucky) to obtain…

The individual’s job and their perceptions of it.
How this relates to the total business.
How their concerns relate to the project.
What improvement opportunities they perceive.
What improvement opportunities you perceive.

Management consultants typically make one of 4 common mistakes in a focus interview…

Collecting incomplete answers: Position and educate the interview.
Probe for detail.

Not enough detail: Relate examples to narratives on attached sheets.  

Writing illegible: Set expectation that interview is being documented.
Rewrite after interview.

Poor rapport: Work the issue.
May have to terminate interview and have another consultant do the interview who can develop a relationship with the employee.

Forewarned is forearmed. With that in mind here are our Top 12 reasons an interview can fail…

Interviewee ducks questions.
Interviewee changes agenda.
Interviewee does not want to do interview
Interviewee thinks you are assessing him: (Hire/fire decision).

Interviewee does not believe your reasons for interview.
Interviewee wants to be your best friend.
Interviewee demands information from you that you cannot give.
Interviewee is temporarily unstable.
Interviewee runs out of time.

10.  Interviewee has brought 5 colleagues along.

11.  Client restricts interviewee list.

12.  Interviewee has just been interviewed.

We recommend going through a simple checklist to avoid failure. Do not simply check them off. Think very carefully about the impact of the interview. Every client is different. Some are analytical, other hierarchical, while others simply hate consultants! This checklist will serve as a guide only. Make sure your clients unique context is built into the checklist below.

Preparation of the Interview: Did you agree a location?
Did you agree a start time?
Did you check the hygiene factors (interviewee had a drink etc)?
Did you check the name and position of the person being interviewed?

Questions you should ask: Open ended
Probing & Linking      
Venting (gives someone who was never heard, a chance to be heard)
Closed (Yes or No)

Questions you should not ask: Leading
Evaluative
Limited Choice

Execution of the Interview – Introduction: Did you introduce yourself?
Did you explain the purpose of the interview?
Did you confirm/clarify the time contract?
Did you confirm interviewee’s position/capacity?
Did you outline the framework of the interview and explain roles?
Did you explain to what end the interview would be used?

Execution of the Interview – Close: Did you finish with an open question (is there anything else you would like to tell me)?
Did you agree/clarify any next steps and timings?
Did you thank the interviewee?

Follow-up: Are your interview notes in a readable form?
Do you have any verbatim quotations? (These can be very powerful, especially when viewed in context)
Are the key points summarized so you know to whom and when to feedback your interview notes?
Have you quality checked the interview – do you think it is honest and accurate?

Assuming all went well in the interview, it is essential to consider six elements when capturing your findings:

Check out the client’s perceptions with them. Are his perceptions correct based on the early interview feedback?
Review written documentation of problems. How do these compare with the feedback from the executives and frontline employees?      
Quantify wherever possible. Simple bar charts indicating the number of interviewees citing a problem is better than qualitative feedback.
Be sensitive to hidden agendas and personal motives or issues. Interviews are not fact. Employees use them to further an agenda. So ensure you are cross-verifying information.        
Relate to the big picture.
How will you present this? What is the visual style you plan to use

Focus interviews are a powerful method of extracting information from a client, building support for your work, determining other issues you made not have considered and creating your earliest data points for the consulting engagement. They force you to see above the financial analyses to test your thinking at the organisational level. This is a crucial test of your thinking.

In an interview with the art of conversation is probably the most valuable attribute, as the interview is nothing more than verbal choice between fees and candidate countries.In general, verification of skills, experience, qualifications, hobbies, etc. interview will be conducted and to select appropriate and deserved the best candidate for the position in the company that can handle the work effectively, independently. Remember that the interviewer (s) are of great experience.

They are fully aware of the nature of the commitment and qualities required of a candidate for a specific job. They can assess the candidate of his words and expressions.On this issue, the applicant must be well prepared to give a short answer, point to point, with appropriate examples, so he can impress the interviewer; Below are several techniques that are commonly observed during the interview.There are usually two types of interview (s) verbally and (b) writing.Be confident, be brave, be polite, be positive, whereas before the interview.

Your fear and tension are major disadvantages in obtaining work, so try to avoid it completely.Soon after receiving the invitation from the company must prepare / modify the corresponding object.Inquire about the company’s background and who interview the exact time, date and place.One day before the interview, visit the company and know the exact location and gather information about the Company, their main business activities, product or service, how many branches, theirÂlocations, how many employees work (Technical / Non-technical) salaries etc. complete, so the interview will have more confident to give an adequate response.I think I will attend the interview but not to beg anything from the interviewer.Never say, false expressions of interest or a hobby, not really.Do not lie any question at any price, leading to leave a bad impression.Dress neat combination with tie shoes (polished), cut nails, use a light fragrance / spray, combed, etc.

Avoid strong odors / aftershave.In case if you have mouth odor, then Pl. use mouth refreshing tablets / syrup before the interview. Advised not to use onions, garlic and other foodstuffs, which allows odor while talking.Reach the interview location at least half an hour earlier.Patiency Upto wait your turn in the Waiting Hall / Room. And do not discuss any technical / subject matter with his colleagues, it will lose credibility.Enter the interview room / room due knocking on the door. Do not enter the room nor too fast nor too slow. Normal speed and decent entry must characterize the appearance of the applicant beforeinterview board.After saying the usual greeting, good morning / afternoon / evening on the situation, gave a brief introduction and reasons to come here and do not wait till the interview to startdiscussions.Do not shake hand as if the other side comes first.To take place quite normal – when the interviewer your requests.

And do not forget to say “Thanks”.In case if you wear a hat or sunglasses it off as you enter the room / hall.Sit comfortably with more confidence and do not carry any content, recommendations or bag on the table for the interview. You have to keep down on your side.Listen very carefully attentatively & questions and to respond to natural and normal ways.If you do not understand the question correctly, ask him to repeat and say honestly have no shame / free here. If you do not understand all the questions, then, quite simply, do not attempt to give a false answer / information.

The first impression is the best impression to try to give a good impression.Talk soft but very clear tone. Your words shold be a good match. You must express his ideas very clearly. Maintenance of normal terrain at normal speed.During the interview, see the eyes of the interviewer and to respond appropriately.The interviewer read body language, not so much turn or not sit so comfortably release the legs, arms and shoulders, so be careful.Keep friendly and good atmosphere in the room / hall with a smile on your face, and some time to laugh and not so close with the interviewer, otherwise bad impression count.Your every moment will be checked by the interviewer.Do not complain about the previous employer / Co. at each stage, giving a negative thought to the interviewer.

Some times the interviewer ask why they left previous Co. what are the main reasons, etc., to give appropriate and correct answers as to bright prospectus or a good working atmosphere, etc.Never say, do not pay now, not good company, it will again give negative points.Besides the items they may require other general and social issues to give the correct answer.Do not store any kind of mental stress, whereas before the interview, leading to failure of the interview.Some times, they may request personal and general issues at a time, to confuse the candidate, so listen carefully and give a one response and not lose composure.Rehearsal for you to interview the captain or a friend so faithful will come and can face interview in excellent tone.Do not ask questions / quarries, until and unless they were requested.Do not ask first for salary / package and other services, benefits, etc.Remember all short dates of qualifications and experience, sometimes they may ask, what to mention in the CV-it.Do not play with items before the interview table.Do not change directions frequently places, it will lose the attention of interviewers.Do not blame your fate, destiny and family background or financial matters, this would be another negative point on your part.After the interview finished, leave the premises immediately and left the impression that it must attend another interview at another location.Try to cover its weakness by producing the other achievements.Development of his personality to suit the position you have applied…..

Before we go into the article proper, let us consider some relevant facts you may or may not know and questions you may have asked or about to ask concerning unemployment and the sure ways to get a dream job:

 

FACT 1:

The world is home to millions of unemployed. This staggering statistics means that at this very moment millions of men and women alike are being subjected to unemployment related poverty and all its ramifications.

 

QUESTION 1:

Isn’t it amazing that in the face of the above mentioned statistic governments at all levels, especially in Nigeria, continues to be lukewarm about unemployment problems and only pay lip service in public fora where job creation strategies are discussed?

 

FACT 2:

My father taught me when I was young that I had nothing to be afraid of as long as he’s around, I know he’s right.

 

QUESTION 2:

Can a government play the role of daddy to men and women with regards to unemployment problems?

 

QUESTION 3:

Don’t you think you may reach your retirement age before you get a job of your dream today, if you fold your hands and wait for the government(s) to get you a job by playing daddy?

 

TODAY’S REALITY:

The reality today is that your education and training career decisions, professionally crafted resume and excellent performance in the job interview are the sure things that will guarantee you get your dream job. This is why I have decided to focus on helping you through this article to excel in your job interview.

The Interview

Your résumé was stunning. Your cover letter caught the attention

of the hiring manager and moved your application to the top of

the pile. You have landed one of the most coveted things on the

road to landing the perfect job.

You have an interview set up! Hold On! Just because you

have gotten an interview, it does not mean that your work is over

on the road to getting the job. This is the time that you will need

to put forth the extra effort to keep your name above the rest of

the applicants.

Hiring managers make their decision about whether to hire

someone for an open position almost entirely on the interview.

This is the make-or-break part of the process to get the job. One

false move and you will be back at the starting point, scratching

your head, wondering where it all went wrong.

Do not worry:There is a way to make sure that you achieve

success in your interview. Interviews are a basic part of the job

search. There is a process to follow when it comes to

interviewing, just like there is a process to follow when it comes

to the other steps required to land the perfect job. Preparation

Before you head out to an interview, it is important that you fully

prepare for it. You will want to go through these steps for every

interview.

By preparing for job interviews in advance, you will help

your success. This preparation should start a couple of days

before your actual interview.

It is important to research the company that you are

interviewing with before you go to your interview.

The interviewer will ask you questions to see how well

acquainted you are with his or her company. If you’ve done your

research, this will show the interviewer that you are truly

interested in the company. By doing the research, you will also

know whether you are truly interested in working for a particular

company.

One of the things that you will want to do before the day of

the interview is to take a “dry run” to the interview location. This

is very important, especially if you have never been to the

company with which you are interviewing.

Drive to the company at the same time of day that you will

eventually have your interview. This will give you an idea as to

what type of traffic you will hit on the way. You will also feel

more comfortable and at ease the day of your interview by

already knowing the lay of the land around the company.

Another step in the preparation process for the interview is to

read over commonly asked interview questions and have your

answers already planned out.

Most interviewers use the same questions and rarely stray

from the typical questions. This makes it easy for you to know

how you will answer almost any question that is given to you.

This will help to keep you sounding sure of yourself.

By knowing what is going to be asked and having answers

already planned out, you will be able to keep your nervousness to

a minimum.

Proper Interview Techniques To

Land The Perfect Job

The interview is the only place that you will have an opportunity

to sell yourself in order to land your perfect job. If you fail the

interview, you will not have a second chance to prove yourself.

That means that you have to know what to say and do in order to

make sure you get hired for the job you want. You can have the

greatest skills in the world, but if you cannot convince the

interviewer that you are the best person for the job, you will not

get the job.

You have to project confidence when you are talking to the

interviewer. That means you should maintain eye contact and

refrain from performing nervous gestures, such as twiddling your

thumbs, squeezing your hands, playing with your hair, or staring

around the room. Your job is to convince the interviewer that you

are the best person for the job, and you cannot do that unless you

stay focused on what he or she has to say. The interviewer

deserves your full and undivided attention, and unless you are

willing to provide that, you will greatly reduce your chances of

getting the job you want.

Dress is very important at an interview. Unless you are going

into a dirty area of the company and are advised to dress casually,

dress professionally—or, at the very least, in business casual

attire (which does not include jeans, shorts, sweats, or running

suits). However, if you know the company is strictly professional,

which is the case for many law firms and executive offices, dress

professionally rather than business casual. You receive

evaluations not only on your skills and knowledge, but also on

the way, you present yourself.

Showing you knows something about the company and what

they do is always good for some points with the interviewer. It

shows you took time to do some investigation before your

interview—thus showing the interviewer that you have an interest

The Mock Interview – This Will Get You Hired Fast!

Yes! The Mock Interview is a great tool to greatly help improve your interview skills and thus get job offers much, much faster than those who do not take the time to practice this essential component of their job search arsenal.

The vast majority of job applicants never practice their interview style and technique prior to sitting for a job interview. While for some performing well during a job interview is a fairly easy task, but for the vast majority of us it is a stressful and challenging situation that may require rehearsal and practice in regards to how we structure our delivery and present ourselves to the interviewer.

Being interviewed quite often brings with it a lot of anxiety and stress that can and will interrupt your ability to think rationally and calmly when it is the most important for you to do so. Just think back to your last job interview and recall the emotions you were feeling just minutes before you sat in the interviewee’s chair, nervousness and anxiety I bet were very much interrupting your thought process during that time.

Here are three ways to help you get through the ever challenging interview process by having a partner perform a mock interview with you to better manage your performance as well as soften the anxiety that will be present during your actual job interview.

Number One: Be selective as to whom you select as your mock interviewer! Don’t pick your spouse or your best friend or your neighbor – these folks are not going to be interviewing you in a way that will highlight your weak points, thus they will not be able to provide adequate and appropriate feedback to help you move forward in improving your interview performance. The best people to seek out to provide a serious mock interview session would be a career coach or someone who has significant experience in interviewing prospective employees. This individual needs the depth of knowledge to know what types of questions to ask, and upon your responses be able to provide insightful feedback to enhance your interview capabilities. Again, this will not be your wife or your best friend.

Number Two: Review in detail your performance/feedback by the mock interviewer. Once you have finished the interview with the mock interviewer and he/she has provided feedback on your overall interview performance make sure you thoroughly understand where your weaknesses reside. If you are speaking too fast ask how to better communicate by speaking slower; if you are not being detailed enough in your answers ask for suggestions as well as examples of how to better answer questions requiring more input from you to better inform the interviewer; also, if the feedback is stating you are to negative, for example, ask for suggestions on how to better deliver your answers so that they are more positive as well as factual in the attempt to remove the negative perception from the dialogue.

Number Three: Commit to the recommended improvements. If you are not able to take constructive criticism during the mock interview process you may find yourself reverting back to your old style of communication, thus not being as proficient as you could be during your next job interview. Therefore you must commit to the necessary changes that will better your performance during the interview process. We all need a coach in life, and it is a coach’s job to not only pat you on the back when you do well but to guide you in a better direction when the situation calls for it. That’s what a mock interviewer with significant interviewing skills can provide any serious job seeker; the feedback and knowledge to help you better perform during a critical job interview.

If you find yourself unemployed for any lengthy period of time, and what I mean by that is well over six months to one year, you may want to take a look at how you are interviewing and if your interview performance may be a roadblock to your ability to acquire a solid career position. Utilize a mock interviewer to help you assess your interview skills and have them point out areas that you could improve on to better your chances in the job search arena.

Life is full of challenges. We meet many confront in our daily life. When we are at the stage of entering school/college/university, we face many hard nut cracking challenges and learn many lessons of practical life through them. After acquiring graduation/post graduation, students usually move towards their specialization or adopt a profession of their choices, according to their own interest, keeping in view the market demand.

Talents and Skills are the only tools, which could lead an individual towards the door of success in this challenging time. To qualify for a professional degree or a job, one should have strong past educational background along with integrated multi dimensional skills. It’s of no use acquiring higher degree without building character, confidence, and expressive personality.

To meet the challenges of professional life, one has to be familiar with many skills to grab the attention of an interviewer, out of which Interview skills are the basic necessities to meet up the future challenges with success.

Either you are applying for a job or want to qualify an entrance examination for a professional degree; you should have to be prepared in advance for an interview. It’s the only way you through which you can gain the trust of an interviewer. An interviewer always attempt to decide that why they should select you? What are the qualities, which you have and other do not have? How can you benefit their organization?

If you can show your trust, your confidence, your commitment, and appropriate skills, then you could win a successful future.

Interview is a form of oral communication. It’s one to one, or one to group interaction, where an applicant proves themselves as a unique person to be the part of an organization.

Remember that interview is always pre-planned and structured. It’s a formal presentation between an interviewer and an interviewee.

Only those pass it with flying colours, who are original and show their interest with confidence and who present themselves appealing.

There are many types of interview like Information gathering interview, appraisal interview, exit interview, hiring interview, college/ university interview, persuasive interview, counseling interview and many more. In this article, we are going to learn about

College/ university entrance and Hiring interview.

Hiring/Entrance Interview is one of the best known and the most widely experienced type of interview, where an interviewer is taken by Human Resource Manager/ Educational Expertise.

To reduce your chances being rejected, here are some basic professional skills, which will lead you towards the path of success in your interview.

BEFORE INTERVIEW

First of all, prepare your mind in advance, that you are going to have an interview next morning. Relax yourself and do not get nervous, tense or tired at any cost.

Before going for an interview, pre-planned few things:

1. Learn about the company, organization or educational institution and do some research in advance.

2. Why should you perform an advance research?

3. Simply to develop good answers and to prove yourself unique.

4. What you have to Research?

5. You can gather information about organizational structure; type of their clients/ students; departments and its branches; past and present achievements etc.

Simply search yellow pages or ask your friend or family member/relative who are familiar about organization or you can collect information through newspapers and websites.

Prepare answers to typical questions. Practice your answer and never rote learn it.

Here are few of the sampling questions, which you can practice in advance.

1. What do you feel about our organization?

2. What are your weaknesses?

3. Why do you want to become a part of our organization?

4. Tell me about your self and about your hobbies.

5. Who is your role model and why?

If you are lucky to know the name of a person, who will interview you, then memorizes his/her name properly.

Decide what to wear.

Remember to Dress simply but elegantly. Dress should be well ironed without crease. Wear comfortable shoes. remember to wear basic hosiery.You can even check what management wears and dress similarly without over kill.

Do not Dress casual or wear Athletic Shoes. Do not spray lots of cologne or wear lots of jewellery.

Do not wear wrinkled attire or flashing tie.

Prepare your file having your portfolio, educational degree copies and extra copies of your resume.

Find proper address in advance, that where are you going in the morning.

Last but not the least;get a good night sleep.

ON THE DAY OF INTERVIEW

Take a bath. Do not apply heavy makeup. Always carry a purse or a small handy briefcase with you.

Do carry your portfolio file. Dress effectively. Do not eat anything containing garlic or onion in your breakfast.Arrive 15 minutes earlier to show your prompt and seriousness.

DURING INTERVIEW

Start it off winner. Offer your hand and give a firm shake, else greet them with your pleasant smile.

Take a permission to sit on a chair.

Show a positive confident attitude and introduce yourself.

Don’t get tense. Be comfortable and face the interviewer effectively.

Listen to their questions effectively and answer it genuinely.

Answer every question with confidence. Have a proper eye contact towards your interviewer. Remember that the interviewer might be more than one, so keep your eye contact with every individual interviewer to make them feel unique.

Whatever you want to answer, speak clearly with a normal tempo voice. Do not shout.

Show your confidence level at every moment of an interview.

Show your certifications or achievements only when they ask you to show.

Always sit straight. It might help them to analyze your personality and your traits.

Use the medium of answer, in which you feel comfortable. Remember to use good grammar and strong vocabulary with neutral accent.

Always clarify your answer. Do not say Yes or No.

Never complains about your past organization or employees.

While giving effective answers. Do not argue and always give respect to your interviewer. Always keep neutral thinking and try to mould your answer according to your interviewer personality.

Do not eat chewing gum, while answering questions.

If they give you a chance to ask any query or question, only ask relevant question.

TRADITIONAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Few of the traditional interview questions, which an organization might ask are

1. Tell me about yourself (in two minutes).

2. Why do you feel that you will be successful in …?

3. Why did you decide to interview with our organization?

4. Are you willing to relocate?

5. Tell me about your scholastic record.

6. Tell me about your extra-curricular activities and interests.

7. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

8. Why should we hire you?

9. Why did you choose to become a teacher, nurse,…?

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

11. Why do you want to leave your current job?

AFTER INTERVIEW

With a pleasing smile, say thanks and ask about the next step in the process. Follow up. Call them if you do not get a call within a given time frame and dont forget to write a thank you letter to an organization for taking out their precious time for your interview.

Few reasons for not getting a job.

Might be you lack oral communication skills or writing skills.

Your inappropriate attitude could also let you down in your interview.

Lack of knowledge about the working world.

Lack of confidence.

Inappropriate/fake degree.

Lack of experience.

Lack of motivation.
