Normal 0 RESEARCH PAPER

ON

JOB SATISFACTION OF CALL CENTER EMPLOYEES

ABSTRACT

Job satisfaction plays a vital role in life of man, because it affects positively on the personal and social adjustment of the individual. On the contrary job dissatisfaction adversely affects on the physical and mental health of the individual. The relationship between job satisfaction and employee’s performance has always been discussed in organisational behaviour and human resource management literature. A highly satisfied employee need not necessarily be a profound performer. However, an employee, who is dissatisfied, can cause irreparable damage to the orgnisational effectiveness. Performance management system should be based on ideological underpinnings and a holistic context by strengthening the linkages among the key components such as performance planning, performance execution, performance appraisal, recognition and reward, and performance improvement on a continuous basis. The paper discusses performance management and job satisfaction of call center employees in Indore. Present study is based on the primary data collected from 188 call center employees through a pre-tested, structured, comprehensive questionnaire. The key issues were identification and definition of key performance areas, role clarity and direction, performance feedback and potential appraisal, and job rotation as a powerful tool to develop and unleash employee’s potential. Factor analysis highlighted the significance of three sub-systems of performance management system, i.e., performance planning and development, employee involvement and empowerment, and organisation-employee rapport. The paper concludes that the conducive and congenial physical, social, and psychological conditions present in the workplace have potential to enhance the job satisfaction of the call center employees.

Introduction:

Job satisfaction is a complex phenomenon, because it is related to various casual factors like personal, social, cultural, environmental and financial. The nature of the job is an important factor in deciding the level of job satisfaction of employees. More important is the long-term prospect of employment in the organization that, which creates a sense of involvement and commitment to the job among employees.

Job satisfaction is an individual’s attitude towards the job or it is an individual’s reaction to the job itself. Job satisfaction is also a positive emotional state that when a person fulfill his needs and aspirations. Job satisfaction may be general or specific. Many factors influence job satisfaction of the employees. First and most important determinant is supervision and style of leadership. Employee oriented leadership styles enhances a greater amount of job satisfaction. On the other hand production oriented leader may cause low job satisfaction. Job content factors like achievement, responsibility, recognition and advancement leads to job satisfaction..

Job satisfaction is intrinsic as well as extrinsic in nature. A satisfied employee derives his level of satisfaction from various sources. It is a feeling of affiliation that he drives out of

his job context and the context in which he operates the job. There are various definitions of job satisfaction. The resultant psyche leads to higher level of involvement, greater degree of participation, greater cost consciousness and timely maintenance of job schedules. Locke (1976) defined job satisfaction as a pleasurable emotional state resulting from the perception of one’s job as fulfilling one’s important job values, provided these values are compatible with one’s needs. Job satisfaction is the most widely researched subject in the area of human resource management. According to an estimate of Locke (1976) about 4000 articles have been published till 1976 in the area of job satisfactions. Yet there is perhaps not a single area in social science fraught with ambiguity or conflicting opinion of methodological nuances than the work satisfaction. Paradoxically there are very few areas more researched than Job satisfaction. Brayfield-Rothe (1951) used a scale to measure overall job satisfaction. This scale contains 18 items in relation to job satisfaction put in a semantic five point scale (strongly agree, agree, not sure, disagree, and strongly disagree). So the possible total scores varied from 18 to 90 with the undecided or neutral point at 45. A total score above neutral point explains ‘ satisfaction’ and below is the level of dissatisfaction. The degree of satisfaction can be observed from the relative distance of the respondents from the neutral points.

As stated , large number of studies have been conducted on job satisfaction. These studies have brought variations in findings of job satisfactions and also on the context of the job behavior. In the earlier decades of study, Rothisberger and Dickson (1939) found no clear relationship between job satisfaction and performance whereas Vroom (1964) found a very weak relationship between job satisfaction and turnover. Studies conducted in the eighties and nineties found out that job factors are not unidirectional in their effects. They served to be both sources of positive and negative satisfaction. The personal factors like skill, experience, education, mental health have a significant influence on the overall job satisfaction. The latter studies have also identified that job security, recognition for good work and good environment are treated as more important than promotion making. These findings are mostly observed in technology driven and heavy equipment industries like computers, satellite, four wheeler industries.

The important factors identified in the earlier studies related to job satisfaction are the poor working condition, peer group behavior, routine nature of the job and the working hours. These particular findings from the majority of the researches conducted in western

business environments were typically from software based industries and business operating with severe time constraints, stiff deadlines and varying work order In contrast

lack of alternative job opportunity, job insecurity, profit centered company policies with

limited employee welfare orientation, absence of recognition were major causes of dissatisfaction .

Job satisfaction leads to various problems. Some of these are absenteeism, turnover and negative publicity. Absenteeism is inversely related to the level of job satisfaction. Job dissatisfaction produces a lack of will to work and forces the employee to go away from work as far as possible. It is also found that dissatisfied worker quit the job over time and seek satisfaction elsewhere.

Objectives of the Study:

To find out the level of job satisfaction of call center employees.

To find out the level of job satisfaction of male and female call center employees.

To study overall job satisfaction according to some personal factors.

To study level of satisfaction with various aspects of job.

To study level of satisfaction with family and social life of call center employees.

The Brayfield – Rothe Scale of 18 items was used. The scale for Perceived Importance of Job Facets was used to measure relative importance of the specific job factors. Specific aspects of the job (functional commonalities were associated and attempts were made to keep the nature and hierarchial diversity of job content to possible minimum) in the form of fourteen items were given in a five point scale. A pilot study over a small sample (respondents known to the researcher and whose opinion are not accounted for in the latter study) was undertaken to modify the questionnaire. A split -Half technique tested the reliability of the questionnaire where the reliability coefficient (0.75) was statistically significant. A part of the questionnaire also covered the job facets and life satisfaction components covering job related factors and personal factors. In this section the first part covered ten factors concerning the satisfaction regarding specific aspects of the job. The response pattern was in a dichotomous format. The question related to satisfaction with family and social life were also put in dichotomous format with options of satisfaction / dissatisfaction. Open-ended questions were put to supplement the exploration through structured questionnaire and to understand the major causes of job dissatisfaction.

Results:

Some of the relevant and significant results of the study are presented in the following

tables.

Table 1: Level of satisfaction with the job and the organization

The results from the table shows that majority respondents (73%) are satisfied with the job they are doing whereas a majority (75%) is dissatisfied with the organisation in which they are working. This finding is self-contradictory. As an explanation it is observed that the nature and content of the job is the driving fore behind satisfaction whereas the apprehensions and operational problems for long term survival of the institute are the indicators of dissatisfaction.

The result from the table – 7 reveals that there is a significant negative correlation between the level of satisfaction and perception of the employees on the job security. The concept of high volatility of call center business has gone in to the mind of employees for which their apprehensions regarding tenure of job in the life of the company has a negative correlation.

Though call center are offering an exorbitantly high salary structure, the respondents did not find the usual job status associated with the salary. So we observe job satisfaction having a negative correlation with job status.

CONCLUSION:

The present study highlights some of the major reasons for creating job dissatisfaction among call center employees. Although conventional sources of dissatisfaction like salary, promotion, security, autonomy for work are not relevant in call center business but the level of satisfaction is limited due to some emerging phenomenon like volatile industry structure, flat organizational design, literally a non-responsive market and other allied factors. So the probability of managing these dissatisfaction indicators at the organization level seems a remote solution. The intervention of psycho-social machinery for creation of intra-organisation and inter-industry job confidence is the call of the day for increasing job satisfaction levels in the call center industry.

Responding To Globalization: India’S Answer

Broadly speaking, the term ‘globalization’ means integration of economies and societies through cross country flows of information, ideas, technologies, goods, services, capital, finance and people. Background of the Study:

Job satisfaction is the result of various attitudes possessed by an employee towards his job. These attitudes may be related to job factors, such as wage, job security job environment, nature of work, opportunities for promotion, prompt removal of grievances, opportunities of participation in decision making and other fringe benefits. Job satisfaction may thus be defined as an attitude which results from a balancing and summation of many specific like and dislikes experienced by an employee in the performance of his job; or an employee’s judgment of how well his job, on the whole, provides opportunities to satisfy his needs. It refers to one’s job, his general adjustment and social relationship in and outside his job. This satisfaction and dissatisfaction with one’s job depends upon the positive or negative evaluation of one’s own success or failure in the realization of personal goals and perceived contribution of the job to it.

Universities are the center for imparting higher Education. Universities in the modern world are expected to seek and cultivate new knowledge ,provide the right kind of leadership in all walks of life and strive to promote equality and social justice. The Universities in India, however ,have to shoulder some additional responsibilities. They have to be conscience to the nation, develop programme for adult education assist in improving schools, and try to bring back the center of gravity of academic life within the country.

The university system has to lay stress on and pursue four important elements, they are(i)Excellence(ii) Modernization(iii)Interaction, and (iv) Self-reliance. These are all inter-related. True pursuit of excellence in all spheres of activities of a university will help imbibing and nurturing in the university life. The qualities of humanism, tolerance, reason and adventure of ideas, search of truth and thereby help for leading humanity towards even higher objectives. Modernization in terms of courses, facilities, evaluation methods and faculty up gradation will turn enrich teaching, research, examination system and extension activities. Modernization equips better the university to play its role effectively. Interaction and inter-dependence are well recognized concepts in the present day global situation. Universities are no exception to this. They should come out of their ivory towers concept and interact with outside world viz .the society , the Government, sister institutions, industrial organization and the world. Through interaction, the university excellence should be shared for national development.

Autonomy in the true sense should be the privilege of the University system so as to enable it to respond with full vigor for fulfillment of its objectives and goal. Academic autonomy relation to offering courses, evolving evaluation methods, teaching research and extension activities is available. Financial autonomy is vital for continuation of universities as centers for excellence and need of the hour is to initiate steps for fund generation and reduce its dependence on the Government to the extent possible, thus paving the way towards self-reliance.

Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU),was established in 1989.In its search for imparting quality education through Distance Mode, it is trying to create a distinct identity in the Indian Open Education System. The YCMOU is the 5th Open University in India, and the fourth one at the state level with its goal of becoming a ‘Mass Varsity’. It emphasizes on vocational, technical, professional as well as general educational programmes and its approach towards fostering a new work culture and developmental linkage. The university has set out to create an identity on the national educational scene. The university is trying to develop such management practices that will help it to become efficient, economical(cost-effective) and accountable at each level.

YCMOU runs more than 177 programmes through Distance mode. It has developed more than 1500 books, more than 342 Adios and more than 350 videos on various subjects. It has achieved Award Of Excellence for Institutional Achievement. in Distance Learning from the Common Wealth of Learning, Canada(2002). It is listed among the Mega Open Universities in the World (2005). It has many International Collaborations and some are now in pipeline. They are: Common Wealth of Learning, Canada; Commonwealth Secretarial London, Brock University, Canada, Athabascan University, Canada, Wawasan Open University, Malaysia, the Chartered Management Institute of London, UK and International Food Policy Research Institute for the Global Open Food and Agriculture University, U. S. A. etc.

The researcher is working in YCMOU since February 1992. Holding on many positions , he has witnessed university activities closely. The personnel working at YCMOU has carried out many responsibilities. They used to carry on any responsibility they are shouldered upon. There are various types of activities carried out in a distance education set up like planning of programmes, development of instructional materials, production of instructional materials, delivery of materials and services like counseling, assessment etc, evaluation of products, processes and services ,maintenance of revision of instructional programmes and administration type work, etc.

When one considers about the job satisfaction on the grounds like good infrastructures, good garden, good working environment, it also depends upon the status & recognition, sex, age and experience and the qualifications that contribute for having the job satisfaction. Ones attitude towards the job and personal involvement in the job also affects the satisfaction in the job. Organizational Climate and personality characteristics also play a major role in influencing the job satisfaction of any employee.

Working condition is the major contributor for job satisfaction. But all types of work condition are neither fully satisfying nor dissatisfying, Job satisfaction definitely promotes happiness, success and efficiency in one’s professional activity wherein the organizational climate helps in developing a happy and congenial interactions among the employees & management.

Job satisfaction can be an important indicator of how employees feel about their jobs and a predictor of work behaviors such as organizational citizenship, absenteeism and turnover. Further job satisfaction can partially mediate the relationship of personality variables and deviant work behaviors .It seems satisfaction and job performance are directly related to one another. There are many researches published on job satisfaction which confirms this statement. Therefore it is necessary to study about the job satisfaction of the employees in YCMOU

Rationale Behind the Study :

Satisfaction pertaining to the job leads the employee to perform well. Employees working in YCMOU are performing their task without any hesitation. But whether they are satisfied with their jobs are not be testified with the research. Therefore the research in this regard is proposed to carry on.

Statement of the Research Problem:

A Study of job satisfaction of the Employees in YCMOU

Objectives of the Research:

1.To study the job satisfaction , of the academic staff of the employees

working in YCMOU.

2. To study the job satisfaction of the non-academic staff working as

class I   employees in  YCMOU.

3. To study the job satisfaction of the non-academic staff working as

6.To study the overall general job satisfaction of the non-academic

employees working in YCMOU

7.To study the overall general job satisfaction of the employees

working in YCMOU

8.To make general remarks pertaining to job satisfaction of the

employees of YCMOU comparing academic staff and each

category level of non-academic staff of YCMOU

Methodology

The research in hand was related to present situation. Therefore the researcher had used the Descriptive Survey Method.

He had used Standardized Questionnaire (S.Q.) developed by Cooper , for measuring the General Satisfaction of the employees, as a tool for collecting the data. Though it was a Standardized Questionnaire , the researcher took the expertise opinion from the Experts pertaining to it and made modification as per their suggestions. In the S.Q. point number 19, words were written abbreviated as w. r. but the expert suggested it should be written in a full form.

S.Q. was included 22 statements following six circles given between High Satisfaction and Low Satisfaction. It was as six point questionnaire. After the discussion with the Experts, it was decided that six point should be defined six grades as given below with their value..

]]>

Most people send out their resumes out to many different companies and never get any replies. It’s not your resume sending techniques; it’s your skills or lack thereof. No longer do theoretical skills appeal to employers unless you’re a math major. Your marketable skills have to show accomplishment rather than be a list of inexperienced skills.

Start a side project in your spare time that can bring out your value. If your job field is marketing, then create a viral campaign on the internet and document the process. You’ll not only hone in on your marketing skills, but will demonstrate application of your knowledge.

Get an internship or volunteer position in a field where you want to develop skills. If you’re interested in managing a restaurant business, become a waiter or a busboy. But don’t sit back and work. Be active and ask questions on how things are run. Make it clear that you have a desire to learn and are willing to learn things from the ground up.

If you currently have a job at a company, ask to participate in any projects they might be having. You don’t have to be the team leader in the group, but at least show you played a part in their success. This also shows your interest in the company and your eagerness to stay on top of their affairs.

The key is to keep learning, no matter what stage of your career you’re at. Transferable job skills don’t develop overnight. They require effort and some initiative on your part, but it will have long-lasting effects on your career. Being able to talk intelligently and confidently about a project for which you played a primary role in its success is incredibly important. Make sure you can describe the problem clearly and how your project solved the problem, even to a nontechnical person. Showing passion for your work is very attractive for a prospective employer.

Having a family means you need to revolve your job hours around them. Set your own hours with these jobs and still get decent pay. These jobs are found primarily in the health, retail and work at home fields.

Nursing – The income is high. The demand is high. The only problem for most people is the education degree needed to apply for these jobs. Since nursing is in such high demand right now, there are rigorous two year programs that get you certified and working. The initial requirements are tough but it worth the effort. You have a lot of flexibility in the hours you work but when you work, the hours will be long.

Salesperson – As a retail salesperson, you can get part time or full time work at most shopping malls. These positions have a high turnover rate and so stability is not always guaranteed. However, there will usually be tons of demand during the peak shopping seasons like Christmas.

Teacher’s Assistant – Apply for a position at your child’s school as a teacher’s assistant. You will help the teacher prepare lessons and supervise the children during their daily activities. Since the hours are the same as your child, you will not have to worry about conflict job hours. You can pick them up after school and take them home. Depending on the school, you may need to take some education and training classes.

Work at Home – You set the hours and the time commitment. You make as much or as little as you want. This leaves as much time as you want for your family. This saves a lot of money on daycare as well. The biggest problem is maintaining a schedule where you must meet the daily goals. Since you are your own boss, if you do not bring in the money, you can only blame yourself. If you need ideas for work at home businesses, figure what your skills are and focus on that. Then scale the operation.

Looking for a Technical Job in New Zealand

Edit Article |

Posted: Dec 20, 2010 |Comments: 0

There are several different ways to source engineering jobs in New Zealand. You can go online and see what engineering jobs have been advertised, look in the positions vacant column of the newspaper, or you can go through a technical recruitment agency.

Of the three, going through an agency is more likely to get you a good match for your abilities and experience.

When you apply for a job in answer to a newspaper advertisement there is usually only enough information about the company’s needs to fill a small square. This does not give you much to go on and you may find that the position is not a good match for you. The trouble is that you usually don’t find it out in so many words; you are not told that they need someone with different abilities and experience. All you know is that you keep on getting rejections – or hearing back nothing at all. That is all very depressing, but firms do not have the time to tell hundreds of applicants just why they have rejected them.

But by going through an agency, all your skills and experiences will be much more closely matched with the positions available. The company who contacts the agency for possible employees will tell them in much more detail than can be fitted in a newspaper ad what skills are needed for their position. The agency then interviews you – and others who match the criteria. They know whether you would be the best match for the job. This saves a great deal of work on your part in searching for leads, sending out your resume and waiting for ages to hear the result.

So looking for a technical job in New Zealand need not be as hard as it sounds, especially if you are not actually in that country at the time. Going through a recruitment agency will give you the best edge.

Tips For Hiring The Best Employee For The Job

By: www.ptclbuzz.weebly.com

How do you find the right employees for your company? How do you avoid the pitfalls that occur when you hire the wrong guy or gal?

Well, let’s face it: some things can’t be prevented. No matter how good a potential candidate may look on paper, and even if they make a great impression in their interview(s), you can’t guarantee how they will function as an employee of your company.

Some businesses employ the use of a personality test, competence test, or other such tests. These are a great way to get an extra gauge on how a prospective employee may do things once hired.

When it comes to actual competence testing, however, it is best to not only view their previous experience but also give them an on-the-job test. Let’s suppose that you are going to hire a cook. Make arrangements with the job candidate for him or her to come in and cook a sample meal as part of the process of executing a second or third interview. This may seem a little strange, but it will help you ensure you find the right person for the job.

When it comes to personality, you can ask the person certain questions and give them certain hypothetical scenarios in order to get a feel for how they might react in these situations should they be faced with them while working for you. Think of issues that you have encountered with prior problem employees.

For example, if a prior employee talked too much on the job and wasn’t as productive as you’d have liked, ask during an interview what the prospective employee’s outlook is on talking and doing personal things while on the job. This will not only get the subject on the table, it will also let them know right off the bat that you aren’t going to stand for any tomfoolery at your workplace.

What about employees who are too bossy? What about ones who assume too much about their leadership role without prompting or being named as a member of management or without being named as a supervisor? Sit down and write down a series of issues you’ve faced, and formulate polite questions about this which will help you weed out the bad and keep the good, when you are hiring.

Remember that when you hire someone, you are not the only one interviewing. You are also being interviewed. This potential candidate for the job has every right to look at what you have to offer and decide if they think it will be worth working for you. Give every interviewee a chance to prove himself/herself. But also, make sure you also make a point to sell them on what advantages working for your company will present.

What most entrepreneurs and companies don’t understand is that often the main job of the PR firm is to find the right story. The majority of the jobs on the market these days are the dependable, yet monotonous day in and day out desk jobs. However, for those audacious and venturesome types, there are careers out there that are everything except monotonous, but still just as dependable as well as lucrative. Examples of these intriguing and adventurous professions include military work, Alaskan fishing, guiding hunters, as well as a career as an Arborist.

A military career is not only exciting and constantly varied work, it is also an exceptionally rewarding career with countless benefits for those in service as well as their families. From the land-based Army, to the sea-based Navy and air-based Air Force, a career in the military is sure to offer one exhilarating experiences day in and day out as they are required to be clued in, alert, and always ready to think on their toes. The U.S. Army and the Army Reserve are the foundation of the United States’ military land operations, however, a more technically minded individual would presumably be more attracted to a career in the US Navy or the US Air Force, both notorious for their forward thinking technological equipment and machinery.

One interested in employment in one of the most profitable and risky jobs available should consider a vocation of fishing in Alaska. Obtaining a career as an Alaska fisherman is not always an easy task, as current crewmembers rarely leave their positions. Nevertheless, one who does secure a job on a fishing crew is sure to understand just how lucrative a career in fishing and crew work can be. With wages based upon a share and/or percentage of harvest/catch earnings ranging from 1.5-10% for newcomers. Bear in mind that anyone looking into these careers is advised to obtain a signed contract/work agreement concerning pay and job responsibilities before heading out to sea.

An individual who is already interested in game hunting should be pleased to know that they can get paid to hunt every day if they were to choose the unique career of a hunting guide. Hunting guides are generally trained through schools and/or programs which help those interested in guiding to learn the principal environments where the game is to be found, as well as training in protection of those they are to lead in case something goes amiss in the wilderness. The compensation for work as a hunting guide, unfortunately, is not its main appeal, however, if one truly is a hunting enthusiast the possibility of hunting as a career is a job perk within itself.

An Arborist, or a tree surgeon, is yet another professional option for those looking for an adventurous career, which is far from monotonous desk work. An arborist’s responsibilities include the management and maintenance of various plantlife, as well as focusing on the health and safety of individual trees and/or wooded areas. Requiring certification, those interested in this one of a kind profession must first pass a somewhat difficult written exam, alongside three years minimum of field experience. One interested in arboriculture and is interested in the care and preservation of nature should definitely examine further a career as an Arborist.

It boils down to 3 Things the Interviewer is assessing you on:

There are 3 key filters that an interviewer will assess when considering you for a position:

Skill Personality / Fit Compensation

Skill: Do you have the competencies to not only do the job – but also have the potential for expansion of competencies and upward mobility?

Personality / Fit: Do you connect with the company mission, with the company culture, and are you passionate for the particular assignment in question?

Compensation: Most companies already have a compensation package in mind. If you indicate that your expectations are higher than what they have in mind they may write you off as out of their price range. Alternatively if you indicate an expectation that is below what they have in mind then they may feel you don’t have enough experience.

What is important is that you are prepared across all 3 filters:

Skill: Have your Success Stories polished, practiced and ready. Personality/Fit: Do your homework on the company. Go in knowing the companies mission and culture and speak to how you believe you ‘re a fit. Don’t fake it though – focus only on companies that you believe are a good fit for you. Compensation: Do your homework on compensation. Have an understanding on what is fair or average for the industry and level you are interviewing at.
