Lots of college students perceive extracurricular activities as voluntary options which can be pursued or not. In this sense, college students might enroll in a particular educational institution and graduate with no taking part in any of the extracurricular activity during the whole program. Despite being voluntary, extracurricular activities can be seen as essential factors for success, which extend beyond educational performance, including employment and career. In that regard, the present article will attempt to clarify the statement that extracurricular activities are very important for success.

Skills & Abilities

There are lots of skills and capabilities required by employers that can be learned and/or developed via participation in extracurricular activities. The list of the skills might include team working skills, communication capabilities, leadership skills, and creative thinking. The aforementioned abilities can be learned when participation in extracurricular activities, most of which are based around developing the skills. Taking theatre for example reveals that the activity gives the best setting to develop communication skills as well as team skills. Simultaneously, the activity might promote the development of such elements as self-confidence, which is part of leadership capabilities.

Networks & Companies

It cannot be denied that as well as personal skills and achievements there are other external factors playing a role in career success. Such factors might include good looks, articulation, as well as other aspects unrelated to knowledge. Among such factors are visible in having good and diverse professional connections in different areas. The engagement in extracurricular activities might be seen as a contributing aspect in increasing the network of each individual. Such matter is achieved via making some new friends from diverse backgrounds and interests. In addition, in a more direct way, the extracurricular activities can be substantial from employers’ viewpoint, for which the very fact of participation, pointed out in a cv, is an advantage during the application procedure.

The Principal’s Role in Rural Schools

The role of the principal is multifaceted (Cruzeiro & Morgan, 2006). Like most school districts across America, rural schools and district are confronted and faced with challenges stemming from loss of population, declining enrollment and loss of resources (Patterson et al., 2005). Studies show regardless of the issues rural school districts have with staying in business, studies do very well academically and socially as they move from middle school to high school (Patterson et al., 2005).

What Do Your Children Need to Know to Succeed in Today’s World? and What Can You Do to Help Them at School and at Home?

The world is changing at an extraordinary pace. In research for my new book, I’ve come to understand that there are seven “survival skills” all young people need to master for success in today’s world. The skills needed for careers, college, and citizenship have converged.

Unlike high school, college is the embodiment of freedom. Your parents aren’t there to make sure you wake up in the morning, do your homework and stay out of trouble. How to Feng Shui Your Cubicle for Career Success

]]>

Corporations don’t necessarily design cubicles for success, unfortunately. Many cubicle-dwelling employees feel stuck, exposed, persecuted or unable to advance in their careers. But you can use Feng Shui to make yourself more comfortable in your cubicle and enhance your career success until you finally move into that corner office you desire.

Command position

Most cubicle layouts force the occupant to sit with his back to the cubicle entrance. You can place yourself in the command position, instead, by placing a mirror in front of you. This lets you see behind you, so you can see what’s coming at you – in your life and your career.

Under your desk

Space is at a premium in cubicles, so people often use the area under their feet for storage. You may have your computer tower, a tangle of power cords and maybe even boxes, bags and an extra pair of shoes under your desk. Remove these items if possible, organize anything that’s left. Can you store your personal belongings in a drawer, or leave them in your car?

At the very least, make sure the area directly below your feet is clear. You should be able to sit straight when you view your computer screen. Sitting an angle can cause numerous health issues.

What’s overhead?

Make sure you don’t have heavy items over your head. Many cubicles have built-in overhead shelves. Do not fill these shelves with books or other heavy items. If you do, you may feel downward pressure, like a literal weight on your shoulders. Items overhead can also lead to headaches. It is best not to have any items above your head at all.

Remove Piles of Papers

Piles of papers on your desk can mean you’re not dealing with items you feel you should be. Unfinished business causes stress and anxiety. Every evening, clear your desk so that you come in each morning feeling refreshed and ready to start a new day.

Proper lighting

Make sure your desk and cubicle is well-lighted. The commercial says, “We’ll leave the light on for you,” symbolizing a feeling of friendliness and a welcoming atmosphere. This concept applies at work, too. Turn your light on to increase the energy of the space and invite co-workers to visit.

Life energy

Placing a plant in your cubicle enhances the life energy in the space. Consider a money tree plant, bamboo or jade. The plant should be healthy, green and alive, connecting you to nature.

Items of inspiration

Don’t scatter documents, calendars and to-do lists around your cubicle. Keep these items carefully filed and organized, making room to add inspirational items to your desk. These can be photos, drawings, figurines-anything that brings you joy and inspires you.

Smell

You may not be permitted to burn a candle at your desk, but consider keeping peppermints in your drawer or a small citrus air freshener in your space. These scents awaken your spirit and give you an all-natural pick-me-up in the middle of the day.

Taste

Keep the chi flowing by placing a small jar of candy in your cubicle. It encourages others to stop by to say hello and grab a treat, increasing the flow of energy, wealth and happiness in your social circles.

Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgery & Career Success

A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that many women in the workforce are linking cosmetic surgery to success in their careers. There has always been proven research that appearances go a long way when it comes to a successful career. Whether it’s being hired, keeping your job, or being promoted, like it or not, on some level, appearances do matter.

Now, more than ever, when being faced with news of increased layoffs, and financial crises at home and all over the nation’s economy, it seems as though both men and women are looking to cosmetic procedures to help them get ahead in the workplace. Cosmetic surgery is at it’s height in Beverly Hills, where the best and brightest plastic surgeons hold offices on the most beautiful streets in the Southland. In Beverly Hills body contouring, facial surgery, and non-surgical cosmetic procedures seem to be most popular.

Many of the women in the ASPS survey sited that not only to appearances matter to superiors and clients in the workplace, but they also boost the individual’s self-confidence, helping them be more confident and competitive among peers. Cosmetic procedures are also helpful to those who have undergone massive weight loss. Beverly Hills post massive weight loss patients are often happy with their weight loss goals, but still unsatisfied with their body image. That is because often when someone loses a large amount of weight, they are left with excess sagging skin. Through procedures such as tummy tuck and liposculpture, post massive weight loss patients can gain their self-confidence back.

Of the 756 women ages 18-64 surveyed by ASPS, 13% say they would consider having cosmetic surgery specifically for gaining a competitive edge in the job market. 3% stated they have already had a cosmetic procedure for this same reasoning. 73% believe that looking younger and more attractive does in fact play a part in career success. And 80% think that having cosmetic surgery Beverly Hills or otherwise can boost a person’s confidence.

With this astonishing results it seems that not only do women believe cosmetic procedures help gain a competitive edge in the workplace, but many are acting on that thought as well, either already having or considering having cosmetic surgery for that purpose specifically. And it’s not just women, men are also looking to cosmetic procedures for career. In Beverly Hills male breast reduction, facelift, eyelid surgery, and liposuction are among the most popular male plastic surgery procedures. Men in extremely competitive job markets, or in the entertainment industry are often those who benefit most from these procedures. Please visit www.plasticsurgery.org for more information on this study.

Article from articlesbase.com

What if you could be indispensable as you pursue your dream career? What if, in the face of a layoff at your company, the leadership team wouldn’t even consider eliminating your position? What if, even after a major career failure or setback, the people in your industry still perceive you as a valuable and talented asset? What if you could get an ongoing stream of calls from recruiters, investors, and dealmakers offering you top-notch opportunities? Even better, what if decision-makers called you first whenever they had a new opportunity that fit your abilities? You can make this happen. In fact, in order to have long-term career success and to achieve your most inspiring dreams, you must make this happen. What you need to do is excel, or spike, in two areas. The first area where you should spike is with a technical or functional expertise that brings significant value to others and that you do better than just about anyone else. The second area in which to spike is in relationships with relevant decision makers and opinion-leaders.

5 Skills for Career Success in Budget Hotels

Edit Article |

]]>

Why? Budget is where the future is.

Thats right, it is the fastest growing segment in the hospitality trade and will continue to expand for time to come.

But that is not where hospitality /service is.

Most of the brands are self-help, good looking motels.

If you walk in with skills you learnt in Hotel Management Schools, you would not only fail magnificently, you may want to go back and strangle some of the faculty.

Here are my 5 skills for career success in Budget Hotels:

1. MULTI-TASKING

more than any other space, this segment, requires and rewards individuals who have the capacity to take on a myriad of roles without the slightest reluctance and hesitation.

2. Think Efficiency

In everything that you do here, efficiency is the key word. Customer happiness/satisfaction will follow, once they are educated enough on what is on offer and what isn’t.

3. ABILITY to say NO

I know, you were trained to the ‘customer is always right’ but this is not where it is to be practiced. This is a mass market and any deviation (customization) costs money. you have to be able to say NO to things that are not available/provided

4. Technology Savvy

If you don’t know how it all works together, you will be at sea and without a life jacket. As these brands grow, technology will play a big part in facilitating multi-location issues and guest services

5. Process Management

Everything is laid down in a manual and your job is to learn it, implement it and train it further. don’t question, don’t try and change these things, just follow them. if it says, one swipe of the rag, then thats it.

Its a space that will give you a chance to take on mega responsibilities at a very early stage/age and you better learn to forget that 14 course meal they were teaching you in fnb classes!!

Naturally, for every different position, the actual solutions to that query would be different.
However, there are some frequent skills that employers look for in all workers, whether the employee occurs to be a community engineer or a fry cook. In-Demand Expertise for Success

1. fax machine, primary word processing program, etc.) to spherical out the essential talent units wanted for employment success.

2.
Being able to work nicely with others is a vital skill for achievement in all jobs.

3.
It follows the previous principal that many veteran programmers confer with as GIGO ‚ Rubbish In, Rubbish Out.
Employers are searching for workers who know methods to current themselves in a optimistic manner and who display enthusiasm and data about the corporations they approach. Not only do candidates get evaluated on their skills and experience, but also on how they are approaching the job search. Enthusiastic candidates with fewer skills have a good likelihood of getting the job as uninteresting candidates with higher skills.

JOB SURVIVAL‚ Now there’s a sizzling matter on this period of layoffs. Who gets the ax and who does not is usually a matter of numbers, but it’s also usually a matter of performance.
Staff who have persistently demonstrated their price, taken initiative, and made themselves a invaluable asset to the company have lower incidences of being downsized than employees who put forth mediocre or average effort of their jobs. 5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT‚ As all excessive tech and engineering pros know‚ it’s learn or burn in immediately’s work environment.
The profitable individual is consistently attending seminars, taking classes, attaining training on new merchandise or releases, and in any other case learning new expertise that can maintain them marketable of their careers. Successful persons are lifelong learners. 6. CAREER DEVELOPMENT‚ Career Improvement differs from Professional Development. Skilled Improvement is studying whereas Career Development is a planning and aim setting process. Profitable individuals design a profession plan with written objectives for brief term and lengthy term. They lay out the steps wanted to move their careers from Level A to Point B within Time Frame C and plan how they will achieve those steps.
Successful individuals have someone to whom they’re accountable for their progress and who will monitor their success in attaining their goals. Employers are looking for individuals who (consider it or not) wish to decide to the corporate for an extended period of time.

How do you measure up? Do you’ve got the 6 In-Demand Skills for Success?

One of the best ways to grow ANYTHING is by altering your associations eg. Another free article it is best to take a look at is: Find a partner.

9 Keys to Job Search & Career Success

In recent months, the job market has become increasingly competitive. But even as the economy slows, and there are increasing numbers of job seekers in the job market, there are many professionals who have been incredibly successful in conducting fast, effective job searches. What do they have in common? How are they doing it? Here are nine tips to speed your own job search and drive it to a fast, successful conclusion.

Know what you want and go after it. Starting a job search without knowing what you want will almost certainly end in frustration. Think about it: If you don’t know what you want and what your job target is, how will you know who to contact and how to conduct your search? If you are uncertain about your career goals, it is critical that you spend some time and energy now – before launching your search – on self-introspection and analysis. Knowing what YOU want, what YOU are passionate about, and what YOU bring to the table will provide you with a confidence that simply can’t and won’t be matched by many of your competitors in the job market. This is the crucial first step to any job search and is essential for long-term career success as well.

Know and sell your personal brand. When you think about your next career move, how would things be different for you if employers and recruiters actually sought you out? Personal branding (the process of clarifying and communicating what makes you and your unique value proposition different and special) allows you to make a name for yourself. It differentiates you from your peers and helps to position you as a leader in your field – as a specialist and an authority who knows how to do a job and fill a particular niche in the workplace better than anyone else. Once you are clear on your personal brand, you can use it to project a cohesive brand image and value proposition throughout all your job search activities, and do so in a way that addresses the specific concerns of your target audience. By knowing and promoting your brand, you achieve instant, precision-like focus that positions you as the ideal candidate for the specific type of opportunity that interests you. You gain immediate competitive advantage.

Be able to clearly articulate who you are and what you have to offer. While this may feel uncomfortable to you, the simple truth is that a job search is a sales and marketing campaign: a sales and marketing campaign in which YOU are the product. Through the process of personal branding, you must identify what differentiates you and paint a compelling portrait of your unique value proposition. But, don’t stop with just promoting this in your resume and then become tongue-tied when someone asks about you and your candidacy. You will hear the “what do you do?” or “tell me about yourself?” questions over and over, both during your job search and throughout your entire career. Don’t wing it! Preparation is the key to confidence and the key to making a lasting, positive, and memorable first impression. Be ready with a 30-60 second pitch that immediately and confidently conveys to the listener who you are as a professional and what it is that you offer.

Make their first impression your best impression. Take a hard look at your resume. Like it or not, your resume is your first introduction to most employers, and your only chance to make a good first impression. Effective resumes are highly focused marketing pieces that are strategically written and designed to sell YOU as THE best solution to a potential employer’s needs and problems. Your resume should be written to convey and illustrate your unique value proposition, with succinct “stories” that differentiate you from your competitors in the job market. Does your resume accomplish these goals? Is it focused effectively? Does it accurately present you in the way that you wish to be presented? If not, it is time to rewrite.

Network, network, network…and then network some more. At least 80% of all the jobs are found through the “hidden” job market, also known as the “unpublished” job market. These are jobs typically landed through word of mouth and referrals as opposed to answering ads, posting your resume to internet databases, or other techniques meant to target the remaining 20% of all jobs in the published market. It stands to reason that if the vast majority of the jobs are to be found in this hidden market, that you should spend the majority of your job search time working to crack it. There is no more effective job search technique than networking. So, even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first, just get out there and do it. Make networking a part of your daily routine and plan to spend the majority of your job search time on networking activities (approximately three-fourths of your time is a good estimate). The more you network, the faster your current job search will come to a successful conclusion and the faster and more successful any future job searches will be.

Plan and execute a multi-pronged job search campaign. Yes, networking is essential, but other job search techniques are also important. An effective job search campaign is a multi-pronged one that includes the strategic, planned, methodical use of a variety of job search approaches. Answering ads alone is almost never enough. Neither is working with headhunters, using internet job search sources, or researching and targeting specific employers. But, when you combine all these approaches with networking, carefully evaluate and prioritize the approaches based on relative effectiveness, and then launch an integrated, multi-pronged job search campaign, you will always come out ahead. The best job search is one in which the job seeker approaches it as if it was a job itself.

Build a support team. While your preparation will certainly ease the whole process, job searching can be a grueling and very stressful experience. So, I want to remind you that you don’t have to go through it alone. You should build a support team around you of people who can help you stay motivated and on track while giving you honest feedback and helping you stay accountable to the goals you set for yourself. Family and friends, past and present managers, your peers and colleagues, financial advisors, and professionals in the careers industry such as career counselors, coaches, and resume writers all make excellent people to add to your team. By assembling a good mix of people to support you, from a diversity of backgrounds and professions, you will receive a variety of different perspectives, ideas, and insights that can be very helpful. You should consider joining a job search support club or group – a local one if one is available or an online one. If you have been provided with outplacement services by your former employer, by all means take advantage of the office space and resources offered. The point is that you don’t have to and shouldn’t conduct your search in isolation. Surround yourself with a team that will help and support you. Above all, recognize when you need support and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance and guidance.

Always follow up. Following up on all of your contacts and your activities can do more to influence your success in achieving your job target than anything else. A hand-written thank you note or a more formal, typed thank you letter after speaking with a networking contact, attending an informational interview, or after attending an actual job interview can make a lasting positive impression that gives you a distinct competitive advantage. A follow-up phone call on every resume you send, whether it is a resume sent cold, in response to an ad, or based on a referral from one of your networking contacts can make all the difference in whether your resume is actually read and considered or not. A consistent method of follow up is key and you must make the time in your schedule to do so. Follow up will positively influence decision-makers, it will help key the process moving along, it will show your interest and your professionalism, and it will position you above the competition.

Adopt a “failure is not an option” attitude and make finding a job a job itself. Celebrate your accomplishments daily and weekly, but recognize that a successful job search requires persistence and consistent effort. The more “feelers” you put out, the more contacts you make, the more resumes you put into the hands of hiring authorities, and the more face-to-face interviews you go on, the faster you will achieve your job target. It can be difficult to remain motivated when you don’t immediately see results but remind yourself that job searching is a process and that it takes time. Reward yourself not just for the results, but for the effort.

The ultimate road trip to career success is to start exploring career options that are in demand. It’s important to acquire a good education and discover jobs that meet your skills, personality, and aptitude. If you’re just not sure in which direction to go, start with a free online career test, such as www.projectcareer.com or www.careerpath.com to find your dream job. The Riley Guide, at www.rileyguide.com, is also a good resource which guides you through various steps to evaluating yourself and your career options, in addition to career and occupational guides, what to do with a major in any given area, choosing a career path, changing careers, and planning and managing your career. Lots of great information is featured from the federal government and its agencies, including the Department of Education and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If you’re a nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, medical imager, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech-language pathologist, visit Career Options at www.careeroptions.com, which features links to healthcare related positions across the country. For instance, www.nurseoptions.com provides services to the nursing industry placing registered nurse and nurse management candidates in permanent, temporary, and travel positions throughout the United States. Nurse Options offers free information on advertised and unadvertised employment opportunities, and this service is available to new graduates as well as experienced registered nurses. A link to Absolutely Health Care at www.healthjobsusa.com is another resource for job postings in one hundred different health care categories.

For the ultimate road trip to career success, check out the career options featured by USA.Gov’s Career Voyages at www.careervoyages.com, for good jobs, better pay, and a brighter future. This site has lots of good information on what careers are in demand, high growth industries, emerging industries, and much more. Whether you’re a student, a parent, a career advisor, or looking to change careers, this is a good place to start. As you can see, career options are vast with endless possibilities that can put you on the path to professional success. Take your time and do your research; choose a career that you can not only make money at, but that you will enjoy as well. Not everyone can say they love their job, but this is more than a job, it’s your career, your future. It may be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get going, everything will fall into place, and all you’ll be able to think about is what the future may hold!

One of my college roommates had a brother who was a graduate business student and often visited our rooms. Since one of my possible career choices was to work in business, I asked this business student many questions about his studies and career choices. Everything he said expanded my knowledge and made me more interested in a business career.

This information meant a lot to me because I grew up in a small city where there were only two large employers, the Santa Fe Railway and the U.S. Air Force. Neither organization provided opportunities to learn about executive success in a large corporation.

When I began graduate business studies, I was pretty smug, thinking that I knew just what needed to be done: Get a prestigious degree and wait for highly attractive employers to bid for my services.

Talking with the other business students made me realize that I had a lot to learn about career success. I didn’t even understand what executives did in different industries.

My complacent eyes were opened wide one day when a management consultant from the famous McKinsey firm made a presentation. At the end of the discussion, I asked one of the other students who got to do what this presenter did for a living. My classmate quickly responded, “Strategy consultants.” I asked, “What’s a strategy consultant?” He responded that these were people who worked for McKinsey or The Boston Consulting Group. I remembered those answers and later applied to both firms, not quite knowing what to expect.

Even with all of this knowledge, I was totally unclear about how you went from being a management consultant to having a successful business career working for a large corporation. I guessed that someday a client might hire you. And that’s what did happen to me after I became a strategy consultant.

The key lesson from my experience is that you can have a wonderful education at a university and still lack important knowledge about the most fundamental elements of developing your business career.

Students typically prefer to get information about potential careers from fellow students and professors, but research shows that students and professors provide incomplete information. It’s better to also speak with people who have been developing a career for a decade or so to find out what lessons they learned in the school of hard knocks.

I was recently reminded of this source of information to make more effective business career plans when I corresponded with Dr. Robert Hartinger, a banking executive in Germany who is a Ph.D. graduate of Rushmore University. Dr. Hartinger kindly agreed to share his career experiences and lessons with me so that I could pass them along to you.

Dr. Hartinger started off presuming that the quality of your education was very important to career success. After graduating from his business program at a German university, he soon learned that you have few occasions to apply any of the theoretical knowledge that most schools provide. As a result, new graduates are stuffed full of knowledge and theory that has little relevance to what their employers need.

Instead, degrees qualify people to be considered for certain jobs. Many employers pride themselves on hiring from certain schools and restricting top jobs to those with the most advanced graduate degrees.

Traditional schooling provides few insights into what various industries and types of jobs are like. If students aren’t careful, they’ll seek a type of work that they won’t like. There are two alternatives available:

1. Examine industries and jobs carefully to set the right objectives.

2. Study at a school where you get practical experience in applying theoretical knowledge which gives you a sense of what a career doing that work might be like.

Dr. Hartinger doesn’t rule out the first alternative, but he’s confident that the second one is essential. If possible do both, but at least do the second. From what you learn, he also recommends that you focus on just a few opportunities. Otherwise, your attention and energies will be too widely scattered.

A lot of business success depends on your personality. That’s something that graduate schools often ignore. Outgoing people with pleasing, helpful personalities will do a lot better than grumpy, self-absorbed geniuses who rarely talk to anyone.

Many studies show that the ability to connect to other people in the organization greatly helps both job effectiveness and advancement. Why? It’s simple: You can’t know all of the answers, but with help from others you can do a great job.

But it’s not enough to simply be a connection point within the organization. You also need to add skills that improve your effectiveness.

Here’s where online learning can make a difference. People don’t care where you learn a skill; they are just pleased when you add one that’s relevant to your situation.

Today, many companies offer financial assistance for those who wish to learn new skills. When that assistance is provided over the Internet, costs are reduced and you can take more courses than those who enroll in classroom-based courses. In addition, learning while you work allows you the chance to apply what you are learning. In that way, you can sift through lots of theoretical knowledge to get just what you need. Dr. Hartinger also notes that if an online school offers flexibility in designing courses, your skill improvement can be even greater.

Many young leaders, asking for advice career success. I usually start by saying, career success does not come in one day. Nonetheless, every day I still see young people entering working life pushing themselves as if they were made by the Director in the year. They tend to compare their progress with their peers. You must not and should not compare his career success to your peers.

If you ask me, what is success in your career? Frankly, I do not have the answer. But I can advise you success in your career, what works for me. Nevertheless, ultimately, only you can answer “that the success of your career?” Because only you can find. Nobody can do it for you. This will be determined by their own values and principles in life. You have to define what success in their careers for themselves. It means different things to different people. And it’s your career.

The first step is to ask yourself: “What is success in your career?”. This is not a question that you should consider every day. You do not have to spend time thinking about it. The answer will not be easy. Ask yourself this question, and then give him in your mind how long it takes – do not make the reply.

Remind yourself this – if your career marathon, it includes the preparation for the race – warm windows, stretching, strength exercises, strength building, is a permanent practice. Continued efforts that will eventually get a positive response. And this response a success.
My biggest fear of looking at the many young first stewardship is that many of them embark on this marathon, and ultimately hurt themselves. They hurt themselves, because instead of warming up and stretching, it sprint. In the end they end up injured, taking months and years to recover.

This is important advice a successful career. Your career, like many things in life can not be rushed. You succeed, without haste and without rest with. Your career success comes to you, if you do not rush yourself through it. But it also means that you are not doing nothing with. If you hurry, you start to be careful. You forget that the main important steps in the fight for his career success. If you sprint through at this early stage, you run the risk of overdoing it. On the other hand, if you want of occupation – you will not be placed in the appropriate efforts needed to achieve success.
