Today is a tough time for anyone trying to find a job.  In July the news reported that there is only one job being created for every five individuals needing work.  Last week it was reported that unemployment is still heading toward double digits.  What can we do to ensure that our future is safe from the turmoil in our current economic system.

Rethink your job opportunities

Rethink your job opportunities and your future career choice

My answer is that we need to re-think our approach to jobs and work.  If we have been employed in a position for many years, this is really a  confusing thought.  However, if we decide to use this new economic situation to improve our long-term opportunities, we are not as  frustrated, concerned and scared for what will happen to us tomorrow.  I can say this with all honesty, because the past year has been a tremendous source of frustration for me.  My job has been rendered basically useless and even my back-up plans no longer are viable.

Today, I was thinking about it and how I would like to approach helping all those people that call me looking for jobs.  I feel bad when I have to tell each individual that the job market is still very slow and I have nothing to offer them at the time. My thoughts brought me to the old saying:

Give A Person A Fish and He Can Eat For A Day

Teach A Person To Fish And They Can Eat for a Lifetime.

A Job Seeker and Finding A Job Today Is Like Giving Him One Fish

A Job Today Is Like Giving A Man One Fish

Considering what we see around us today and how difficult it is to find a job today, it makes sense to consider finding a “job” or “work” that will not only add to your financial security but to your long-term happiness and success.  If you were feeling “burned out” before the down-turn of the economy, it is likely that when you interview for that same job today, an employer can sense your feelings and, with the economy being in such an insecure state, that future employer may decide against giving you a job offer.   We all have other interests other than the job we have performed for so many years, what are yours?

Passion creates success and motivation.

Again, this statement is from my heart and I have just experienced it for myself. Finding out what will create a real passion for your job may be the answer for you to find a job that will bring the personal success you seek.  This is not an easy task but well worth the effort.  Personally, I have decided the direction and goal, but still in the process of learning how to monotize my goals.  Luckily, the recruiting business has come back enough to support me somewhat through this time, but only like  a part-time income.  A part-time job or a job that is really not your goal, may be what you need to do while you are creating your “Perfect Future Career” , but knowing you have a “goal” in mind, will get you through it.

There are many sources to help you in your process and I have used most of them over the past year, so check out some of the ones I suggest or find some on your own.  Just begin the process and you may find that your future becomes brighter than you expected.

Job opportunities are no longer easy to find.  Some individuals are feeling that finding a job is like finding a needle in a haystack.  The more seasoned workers and the recent graduates are finding that the job opportunities for either starting a new career or continuing an old one are extremely difficult and frustrating.

Finding a Job

Finding A Job Today Is Like Finding A Needle In a Haystack

Be sure that your resume is “selling you” and your talents in the best way possible.  Each job search step is a critical moment for you to sell yourself.  From the initial cover letter, resume presentation, telephone contact,  interview  and “Thank you” follow up letter.  The process is when you need to put your best foot forward and entice the interviewer to want to know more about who you are and what you can offer their company.

Every potential opportunity needs to be explored.  Being creative in this economy is a must.  Whether you are looking to find your first job or the one that you hope will be the last job before you retire, start thinking “outside the box” of old job search tips

Get Outside The Box To Find A Job Today

Finding a Job Today Requires Thinking Outside the Box

and ideas.  It is unfortunate that many of the career choices that some of us made many years ago are no longer the same.  If we are going to continue in a previous career choice, perhaps we need to start searching for the same career with a twist.  Start noticing what types of employment there are in the career of your choice and the skills needed.  Perhaps with a little tweaking, your skills can be adapted to the new challenges we are facing today.  An example of this, would be a salesman that has sold specific “widgets” all his life and now the “widgets” he sold are no longer a viable product in today’s world.  The knowledge of sales, however, is a talent that many seek and perhaps helping others learn these particular talents might be used in mentoring new salesmen  in the skills and talents of selling products.

If you have been in a particular field or desire to find a job in a particular field, join forums on the internet and find out what individuals are talking about as far as new products or job openings.  You can also make acquaintances that will tell you of any job openings that they know of in the particular field.   It is easy to find forums in most fields, by  googling:     “subject, forum”.   Find a couple of interesting sites and begin interacting with those individuals in  the group.

The social networks, such as Linkedin and Facebook are also good sources of information and contacts.  Do not overlook your former bosses, college professors, friends and family.  You never know who has information that you can use.  You can also contact a recruiter in your  particular field of interest, and begin questioning them about the trends they are seeing in the job opportunities today.  It may be that with just some additional education  or knowledge, you could make yourself more desirable to employers with job openings today.

Job Market and Job Search Affected by Economy

Unemployment Statistics and the Economy Are Not Helping Job Seekers Today

The sad truth is that with our unemployment statistics moving closer to the double digits, we all need to  find a way to make our job skills and talents valuable and offer skills that are current in today’s world.  This requires creativity and an open mind to new opportunities.   Do not close your mind to new ideas or get discouraged, this economic environment is certainly a challenge for all of us.   The economy does create a challenge that we cannot ignore.  Our futures are up to us and we cannot expect the same opportunities that we had before the economic downturn.

My personal journey this year has been a real struggle, but I am confident that my end story will provide me with not only a sense of accomplishment and pride, but a  direction to my career that brings me the financial security and personal joy that will allow for my survival for years  to come.

As they say:  “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”

sabotaging your career interest and career plans

Don't Sabotage Your Own Career Opportunities

Many times we sabotage our own successes in life.

Our own history and our own thought processes sometimes stand in the way of us moving forward.  Not only do we let others influence us but we tend to influence ourselves and many times not in a positive way.

I am sure you can remember sometime in your history being told that you “can’t” do something.  If this came from an individual of power in your life at the time, you could still be carrying that message in your mind.  “Can’t” can be a devastating word in each of our lives and keep us from trying things that we might really enjoy and find success in doing.   If someone tells, you ….”You can’t dance”, you may never try it and think of the enjoyment that dancing brings to our lives.  I hope this has never happened to you.

As they say, “Dance Like No One Is Looking!”

In reality, all of us can dance unless we have some unfortunate physical issue.  Other people may think we are really bad at it ….   but….  if you ever saw the Seinfield episode, with Elaine dancing………….  you understand “dancing” is a personal enjoyment and how we do it or why we do it or even how we look doing it doesn’t really matter.  We do it for our personal enjoyment.

Believing You Can Creates Success

Success Is Created When You Believe In Yourself

GARY COX – Motivational Speaker and Author Wrote A Book Entitled:

“Don’t Let Others Rent Space In Your Head”

There are things that we learn about  ourselves that we are not necessarily good at doing.  For instance, “handling money transactions” as in being a cashier seems to create a “disconnect” for me and my brain.  I seem to panic and be unable to think clearly and don’t like the experience.  If it is important for me to ever have to be a cashier and handle money, I would have to go somewhere and spend many hours learning how to overcome this problem, but I understand it and avoid it.  (Wish I would have realized this about myself before I started an e-commerce store last July.)

Many of the things that we are not good at but we need to learn to be successful, are things that we can learn.  The prime example of this is Computer and Internet ability.  None of us, even the younger of our workers, were born understanding computers or internet  jargon, but with desire it is something we can learn.  There are  many aspects of computer knowledge and some are more difficult to learn, but these are talents that can be learned, just like a foreign language.  These types of skills take desire to learn and understanding that they are skills that we do not bring into this world with us (FYI -don’t look too close at the technical aspects of my blogs, as I must admit — this paragraph is all first-hand information.)

  • Patricia Drain calls the skills and talents that you are actually born with “Gifts” and helps you discover these skills  within yourself to create the “Career Plan” that will work for you.  Her book, “What Will I Be When I Grow Up – Now That I’m 40,50,60″ was a great resource for me this past year.
  • Steve Little’s free questionnaire assesses your skills, preferences and talents and gives you an intensive overview of your personal career interest assessment when you take his career questionnaire. His business expertise combined with the understanding of entrepreneurship helped me create a plan that has brought me more passion to my career endeavors, than I have enjoyed in many years.

Of course, you can also download the free Career Interest Inventory that I created on the right - Secrets To Finding Your Passion For Your Career For 2010 and Beyond, which also is designed to help you discover a direction for your future.  (I am a big fan of education, and the more you learn about yourself, the better decisions you can make for your future.

(Remember: Education is your tool - Implementation is the Key)

It is important that you realize the things you are good at doing and the things you enjoy versus those things that are not your best talents and the things you do not enjoy before creating your own new career plan.  In this way, you can create something that will take you down a successful path for yourself.

One thing that Each Of Us Absolutely Must Face and Overcome For Success Is:

“The Blame Game”

Too late to blame

Don't Play "The Blame Game"

Yes, there are many individuals, circumstances, and events that have contributed to the situation each of us are experiencing  today.  However, spending time playing the blame game, will not move us forward to success.  Whoever or whatever circumstances contributed to your current situation is now part of the past.  In order to move to the future, we must accept  the current circumstance as our new challenge and move forward.   The past is where we were……….  now we need to decide where we are going.

As a recruiter and job counselor, each day, I am told about what individuals enjoyed in their past careers or jobs and the circumstances regarding why they are “seeking a job” today.  Many are carrying around anger or remorse for their previous employment, and are not ready to embrace what they need to do for their future today.  Changes are happening in our environment and economy today that left us unprepared for our future.  Now that we see these changes, we need to accept and decide how we can adapt ourselves to fit financially within it.

YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT YOU DON’T ACKNOWLEDGE

(Another Quote From: Gary Cox)

You Can't Face What You Don't acknowledge

Face The Future and Create Your Career Success

“The Fear Factor”

Fear is another one of those words that stand in our way of success.  “Fear of Failure”, “Fear of Negativity”, “Fear of Making the Wrong Choice”, even “Fear of Success”.

When we are fearful, we tend to procrastinate and not move forward with action.

We have all heard the old saying :

Fear can stop our Career Plan Success

Don't Let Fear Stop You From Career Success

” Do Something, Even If Is Wrong.” There are things to be said about that when deciding about career moves and  I agree with that statement to some degree.  If you do something, I hope that you will do it with some intelligence and forethought.  We learn by everything we do, but it also takes time and money away from doing something that does move you forward quicker.   First hand experience, tells me that a well thought-out plan is important for success.  So preparation is necessary to save you wasted, time, money and effort.  However, don’t get lost in the details and procrastinate,   Fear is a powerful word and will affect forward movement, so recognize it and try to move past it’s devastating effect on you future.

The Law of Inertia

1.  Things That Move Want To Keep Moving.

2.  Be on a Constant Pursuit of Excellence and Self Improvement

(Also a quote from Gary Cox in a Webinar I recently attended)

People in our lives affect us in so many ways, be sure you have individuals that bring about positive movement in your life.  Find at least one person that you trust that does give you positive inspiration.  Then begin to expand that circle to more and more people that have like-interest and feed you to move forward to what you want and what you desire.  Words are powerful tools and can be used to either inspire of create fear, indecision or doubt.

We Wish You Success For Your Future.

Have you ever had a “bad day at work”

and a colleague

or friend says:

“That’s Why They Call It Work?”

Webster Dictionary Defines Work and Job

Work and Job according to Websters Dictionary

According to Webster:

Definition of WORK

Has Anyone Ever Said To You that:

“Finding A Job Is A Job?”

Definition of JOB

something that has to be done : task (2) : an undertaking requiring unusual exertion -it was a real job to talk over that noise b : a specific duty, role, or function c : a regular remunerative position d chiefly British : state of affairs —usually used with bad or good -it was a good job you didn’t hit the old man — E. L. Thomas
Finding A job in the recession is even more work

Finding A Job Is one of the most difficult jobs to have today

During the past couple of years, all of us have found that Work” and “Jobs” have been our main focus because we need the financial security that these two words have provided us for all these years.  Because of the shortage of finding “work” and “jobs” today, many of us are suffering greatly, by not being able to provide for our family in the usual manner that we have known all these many years and I am no exception.

Opportunities that we once depended on to fulfill these two critical functions in our lives just are not being created rapidly enough and we find ourselves in very difficult times.  Not only are the companies that we once depended upon for these two functions struggling, but even if

Help Wanted - No Job Postings Today

The Job Market has changed and Job Seekers Today are Having A Hard Time Finding A Job That Fit Their Talents

they are surviving, they are not ready to add new employees to their payrolls.

I have talked quite a bit about Career Redirections.  With the situation that only one job is being created for every 5 people looking for work coupled with the rapid changes that our society itself is experiencing, each of us must consider alternatives to our “old career choices” and adapt them to what is going on in the world today.  We have learned some valuable lessons through this recession and we have learned them the hard way.

* We no longer should depend on just one source for our income, but consider developing multiple streams of income for ourselves and our future.

* We are living in a time that does not offer the individual a stable economic environment and we must take responsibility  to ensure that our personal livelihood  is safe as we can possibly create for ourselves.

* Many work opportunities that were once in demand are either changing or being absorbed into other job functions.

As a baby boomer, I would like nothing better than to see my retirement opportunity in my personal near future plans, but that vision seems to have vanished over the past couple of years.  This has happened to many of us and we must accept and figure out what is our next step for our future.  My personal options are limited because of life choices and other factors, so as I have said before, my past year has been one of learning and creating a new “career plan” for myself.

Recently, a “friend” said to me,  “A business is just a hobby until you get paid for it”.  Actually, he is an entrepreneur and is my internet service provider.  So, I have been thinking about his comment lately.  Anything that we start, especially as an entrepreneur, goes through a period of not making money, but we still have to put the work in it to make it produce results.  I am sure that in the beginning, he had to connect towers and market his company and at that time, he was not producing financial results.   I would also guess, that he did not consider that a hobby at that time.

***********************************

With his comment in mind, let’s return to Finding A Job Is A Job”.  Consider, discovering what your perfect job would be for your future.  How could you create something to bring you financial security and a sense of accomplishment in the days to come.  Of course, you do need income, but if you are spending time just sending resumes and not getting results, what if you take just a bit of your time to discover something new and different that would give you a “job” for your future.

Suppose you spent some time and found something that would use your skills and desires and began building a career that would create a future for yourself that would bring you passion and joy because it was something that you personally discovered as a perfect fit for your own talents, likes, interest and skills that only you possess.

and have started taking the time to answer the questions, you understand that we are here to  help you discover, your own passions for alternative incomes in 2010 and beyond.

Career Redirections 101 was developed after I used the process I want to teach you.  Through this personal career questionnaire, I discovered my passions and created Career Redirections 101 to help others.  As a baby boomer, self-employed recruiter, previous school teacher and social worker, teaching, helping, and developing others is part of my passion in my career.  Therefore, sharing what I have learned is a natural Career Redirection for me.

As you discover what your passions really are, I want to develop our Career Redirections program to address your specific needs and issues, so your comments, questions and suggestions will be incorporated, in every development aspect of our program.

THE SECRET TO FINDING PASSION FOR YOUR CAREER IN 2010 AND BEYOND:

*A Personal Career Questionnaire to Assist You In Creating Your Career Interest Inventory to Answer The Big Question For Today And Your Future,”What Career Is Right For Me?”

After spending 2009 realizing how quickly  our job opportunities and even the approach we must take to be successful in 2010 and beyond  has been changing, it is important for all of us to realize that in order to feel any sense of financial security we must adapt our approach to our career choices.  The way things have been done in the past are no longer necessarily the way they are done today.

Are You At a Career Crossroad? Find Your Passion For Your Career With A Career Interest Inventory & Career Questionnaire

I read countless suggestions from recruiters, counselors and individuals “in the know”, and much of it is very good advice and should be read and appreciated. Our website has included information regarding “How To Write That Perfect Resume“, “How To Create A Cover Letter”, “The Importance of Social Media Marketing, ” “Working With Recruiters“, and all the other tips to help you find a job.  All the above suggestions are truly helpful and accurate and you can find good information to help you find a job.

However,  here, I would like to give you a different approach to how you direct your next career move,  which  involves more than just the usual suggestions of social networking, writing the perfect resume or cover letter,  and researching companies in your area.

How Do I Find Passion In My Career Today?

How Can We Create Passion For Our Job Today?

If we must make such efforts to find employment, why not use some of our time to redirect what we know and what we can do in a direction that will make us  productive in our work and happy with what we are doing on a day to day basis today and in the future?  The hardest part of this suggestion is figuring out what we know, what we like, and how to take that in a direction that will enable us to enjoy what we are doing to bring in our income for  years to come.   Like me, you may have to find out the hard way, that something you thought you would enjoy is not really the right niche for you.  But, that is part of the process to find the best path for you to follow and should be looked at it from that point of view.

This year, I have seen many acquaintances, job candidates,  and  fellow recruiters focus their efforts in different directions and am very impressed to see that quite a few have found their own personal passion in what they have created for themselves.   My own search has helped me discover secrets that I would like to share with you to help you find your own particular passion and niche and build a successful career opportunity for yourself.  Many people are turning to creating their own work-place.

Passion Is Important In The Workplace

Many of us have been doing the same job for so many years that it has become mundane and we can probably do it in our sleep.  Others of you are just starting your careers and need to try to find a job that will put you in a position to advance  and grow in your potential for many years and not eventually end up to be like the guy in the picture.  No matter where we are in our career, we need to understand ourselves and what we enjoy and will enjoy for a long time to come.  Of course, none of us can predict the future, which we have all seen first hand recently, but we can, at least, try to position ourselves as best we can.

Recently The U.S. Chamber of Commerce not only challenged the U.S. to create 20 million jobs in the next ten years, but also conducted a Free Enterprise Video Contest.  I have been so inspired by the contestants that it has made me want to inspire people to start thinking about “finding their own niche” and moving toward creating a career out of their own personal passions and talents

I have added the video of the winner, Carlos Sanchez, being interviewed and also have provided a link to the Free Enterprise America site for you to see other videos and hopefully understand how individuals just like you and me have made a successful move into creating their own, success in this 2010 world.

Many of you may have seen the Lemonade Video Trailer on our website.    There are many additional “Lemonade stories”  on YouTube.

These people are no different than you or me, and I encourage you to take that first step into discovering what you have to offer the world and moving toward accomplishing all the greatness that you have to offer.   It is never too early or too late.   Houston Job Opportunities and Employment Houston 2010 represents my move toward living out my potential and I am hoping I can help you get your future started by giving you some secrets to unlocking your personal passions and career path.   It is not an easy process to discover what will truly make you happy in your work, but with a little “introspective searching”, you might be able to achieve the happiness and prosperity you seek by using your own unique talents and opportunities.

The Secrets questionnaire is designed to help you develop your personal Career Interest Inventory to discover  “What Career is Right For You”.  It is a simple questionnaire that will assist you in reconnecting with the inner talents, desires and hopes that are part of your own personality traits.  By spending the time to answer your questions truthfully and without any other influences from individuals in your life, it is hoped that this career questionnaire will be an informative discovery opportunity for your future.

Secrets to Discovering Your Inner Career Passion

When you start truly understanding the source of your personal passions, you just may unlock desires and talents that you didn’t know you possess.  It may be that you may need to take some classes (like I did), volunteer a few hours or days a week, join new clubs or associations,  or even just spend more time “listening to your own thoughts”.  The point is to get yourself to a place where you understand the source of your own happiness and then open yourself up to new possibilities for your personal passions and success.

Patricia Drain - Patricia Drain’s background is very similar to my background, so I related to her very easily.  She is an ex school teacher, as well as, a long-time recruiter.  Several aspects of her program really touched me.  She wrote a book entitled, “What Will I Be When I Grow Up – Now That I am 40,50, 60“.  (sound familiar?)  Her approach is that we all have our own personal “gifts” that we are born with and if we develop those talents and “gifts“, we will find our passion and be doing what we should be doing for a career, which will bring us not only joy but also the financial security we seek.  One strong point that she made that really hit home to me is that we all need to develop multiple streams of income for ourselves and not be dependent upon just one source for our financial security.  That is something that I think we have all really begun to understand in these past days.  She has lots of information that will help you on your journey toward your Career Redirections and she has a “teacher’s spirit“.   For Information:   Patricia Drain’s Website
