sabotaging your career interest and career plans

Don't Sabotage Your Own Career Opportunities

Many times we sabotage our own successes in life.

Our own history and our own thought processes sometimes stand in the way of us moving forward.  Not only do we let others influence us but we tend to influence ourselves and many times not in a positive way.

I am sure you can remember sometime in your history being told that you “can’t” do something.  If this came from an individual of power in your life at the time, you could still be carrying that message in your mind.  “Can’t” can be a devastating word in each of our lives and keep us from trying things that we might really enjoy and find success in doing.   If someone tells, you ….”You can’t dance”, you may never try it and think of the enjoyment that dancing brings to our lives.  I hope this has never happened to you.

As they say, “Dance Like No One Is Looking!”

In reality, all of us can dance unless we have some unfortunate physical issue.  Other people may think we are really bad at it ….   but….  if you ever saw the Seinfield episode, with Elaine dancing………….  you understand “dancing” is a personal enjoyment and how we do it or why we do it or even how we look doing it doesn’t really matter.  We do it for our personal enjoyment.

Believing You Can Creates Success

Success Is Created When You Believe In Yourself

GARY COX – Motivational Speaker and Author Wrote A Book Entitled:

“Don’t Let Others Rent Space In Your Head”

There are things that we learn about  ourselves that we are not necessarily good at doing.  For instance, “handling money transactions” as in being a cashier seems to create a “disconnect” for me and my brain.  I seem to panic and be unable to think clearly and don’t like the experience.  If it is important for me to ever have to be a cashier and handle money, I would have to go somewhere and spend many hours learning how to overcome this problem, but I understand it and avoid it.  (Wish I would have realized this about myself before I started an e-commerce store last July.)

Many of the things that we are not good at but we need to learn to be successful, are things that we can learn.  The prime example of this is Computer and Internet ability.  None of us, even the younger of our workers, were born understanding computers or internet  jargon, but with desire it is something we can learn.  There are  many aspects of computer knowledge and some are more difficult to learn, but these are talents that can be learned, just like a foreign language.  These types of skills take desire to learn and understanding that they are skills that we do not bring into this world with us (FYI -don’t look too close at the technical aspects of my blogs, as I must admit — this paragraph is all first-hand information.)

  • Patricia Drain calls the skills and talents that you are actually born with “Gifts” and helps you discover these skills  within yourself to create the “Career Plan” that will work for you.  Her book, “What Will I Be When I Grow Up – Now That I’m 40,50,60″ was a great resource for me this past year.
  • Steve Little’s free questionnaire assesses your skills, preferences and talents and gives you an intensive overview of your personal career interest assessment when you take his career questionnaire. His business expertise combined with the understanding of entrepreneurship helped me create a plan that has brought me more passion to my career endeavors, than I have enjoyed in many years.

Of course, you can also download the free Career Interest Inventory that I created on the right - Secrets To Finding Your Passion For Your Career For 2010 and Beyond, which also is designed to help you discover a direction for your future.  (I am a big fan of education, and the more you learn about yourself, the better decisions you can make for your future.

(Remember: Education is your tool - Implementation is the Key)

It is important that you realize the things you are good at doing and the things you enjoy versus those things that are not your best talents and the things you do not enjoy before creating your own new career plan.  In this way, you can create something that will take you down a successful path for yourself.

One thing that Each Of Us Absolutely Must Face and Overcome For Success Is:

“The Blame Game”

Too late to blame

Don't Play "The Blame Game"

Yes, there are many individuals, circumstances, and events that have contributed to the situation each of us are experiencing  today.  However, spending time playing the blame game, will not move us forward to success.  Whoever or whatever circumstances contributed to your current situation is now part of the past.  In order to move to the future, we must accept  the current circumstance as our new challenge and move forward.   The past is where we were……….  now we need to decide where we are going.

As a recruiter and job counselor, each day, I am told about what individuals enjoyed in their past careers or jobs and the circumstances regarding why they are “seeking a job” today.  Many are carrying around anger or remorse for their previous employment, and are not ready to embrace what they need to do for their future today.  Changes are happening in our environment and economy today that left us unprepared for our future.  Now that we see these changes, we need to accept and decide how we can adapt ourselves to fit financially within it.

YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT YOU DON’T ACKNOWLEDGE

(Another Quote From: Gary Cox)

You Can't Face What You Don't acknowledge

Face The Future and Create Your Career Success

“The Fear Factor”

Fear is another one of those words that stand in our way of success.  “Fear of Failure”, “Fear of Negativity”, “Fear of Making the Wrong Choice”, even “Fear of Success”.

When we are fearful, we tend to procrastinate and not move forward with action.

We have all heard the old saying :

Fear can stop our Career Plan Success

Don't Let Fear Stop You From Career Success

” Do Something, Even If Is Wrong.” There are things to be said about that when deciding about career moves and  I agree with that statement to some degree.  If you do something, I hope that you will do it with some intelligence and forethought.  We learn by everything we do, but it also takes time and money away from doing something that does move you forward quicker.   First hand experience, tells me that a well thought-out plan is important for success.  So preparation is necessary to save you wasted, time, money and effort.  However, don’t get lost in the details and procrastinate,   Fear is a powerful word and will affect forward movement, so recognize it and try to move past it’s devastating effect on you future.

The Law of Inertia

1.  Things That Move Want To Keep Moving.

2.  Be on a Constant Pursuit of Excellence and Self Improvement

(Also a quote from Gary Cox in a Webinar I recently attended)

People in our lives affect us in so many ways, be sure you have individuals that bring about positive movement in your life.  Find at least one person that you trust that does give you positive inspiration.  Then begin to expand that circle to more and more people that have like-interest and feed you to move forward to what you want and what you desire.  Words are powerful tools and can be used to either inspire of create fear, indecision or doubt.
